Pokuase Bulk Supply Point Project More Than Half Way to Completion

One of the six transformers being transported to the Pokuase Bulk Supply Point site

The Millennium Development Authority, MiDA, says work on the Pokuase Bulk Supply Point, BSP, project is at a 61% completion stage after the arrival of some transformers which was procured by the authority in Ghana.

According to MiDA, the BSP project will provide efficient power supply to over 350,000 residents, businesses, institutions and health facilities.

In a statement issued by the authority and sighted by the Vaultz News, the BSP project is scheduled to be handed over to Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, and the Ghana Grid Company, GRIDCo, at the end of the first quarter of 2021.

“Work on the Pokuase BSP project is currently 61 per cent complete, and it is scheduled to be handed over to ECG and GRIDCo at the end of the first quarter of 2021,” the authority said in the statement.

The transformers, which come in 2 sizes, 145 MVA and 39 MVA, and which will support the operations of GRIDCo and ECG, were shipped in 2 batches and arrived at the Tema Port on the April 27, 2020, and on May 4, 2020.

The transformers, manufactured in Turkey, have been subjected to Factory Assessment Tests in the presence of Officials of MiDA, ECG, GRIDCo and other Stakeholders connected to the project.

From Friday, May 8, 2020, all the transformers made their very slow journey from the Tema Port to the Project Site at Pokuase.

How important are these transformers to residents and businesses in and around Pokuase?

“The arrival of all the six transformers, together with other related equipment, marks a significant milestone in the construction of the first 330kV Bulk Supply Point in Accra, which will be the largest Substation in Ghana when completed,” the authority stated.

Ahead of the arrival of the transformers, MiDA has worked with ECG and GRIDCo towards the safe transportation of these vital equipment to the Project Site, to ensure very minimal disruptions to power supply to consumers along the way.

Nonetheless, MiDA said it is delighted by the fact though, there is an ongoing global crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, such vital equipment have reached Ghana on time and will enable the contractor, Messrs Elecnor SA, to meet the project’s timelines and deliver this critical project that will benefit many citizens.

The authority also noted that it has together with its partners have put in place plans and protocols in line with government’s policies to ensure the safety of its workers in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic in Ghana.

BSP

The Pokuase BSP project is funded by the United States Government through its agency, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, MCC, and the Government of Ghana as part of the Ghana Power Compact Program.

The Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Madam Akosua Frema Osei Opare, last year on April 30, broke ground to begin work on this $50 million project.
