The Running Mate of Former President John Dramani Mahama, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, has assured chiefs of Sekondi in the Western Region that the next NDC administration will rebuild the Sekondi Central Market, to enhance economic activities in the area.
She has stated that, the upgrading of the Sekondi Central Market has been catered for in the party’s manifesto, adding that the project will be undertaken with funding from the party’s $10 billion “Big Push” for infrastructural development.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also noted that, the Technical Vocational Education and Training TVET would be prioritized in the region to enhance the youth and to enable more young people in the region to be technically equipped to access industrial jobs especially, in the oil and gas, and food processing sector.
According to her, when NDC returns to power, she will effectively address unpaid compensations for lands taken by the state during the Kufuor led government for projects, as it is the concerns of the Chiefs of Sekondi.
In her closing remarks, she called on the Chiefs and people of Sekondi to vote for the NDC for a meaningful change, indicating that, the NDC government would ensure that development in the various sectors of the economy, particularly the oil and gas sector, become more beneficial to the people of the region.
Meanwhile, the Acting President of the Sekondi Traditional Council, Nana Barima Ekow Gyesa II, has expressed disappointment that, although the present government promised to address their concerns regarding the compensations for lands, Sekondi market upgrade and job creation, none had been fulfilled.
He expressed hope in the Vice-Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress. “We are optimistic that you will help address our need when you win power,” he said.
Also, he intimated that, since the development has to be beneficial to the people, the progress of the oil and gas sector must reflect in the wellbeing of the people, particularly the youth in the region.
