Former President, John Dramani Mahama.

John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has promised the Ghanaian youth of his government equipping them with necessary IT skills.

Amongst other policies spelled out in the party’s manifesto, the former president vowed the implementation of the ‘One Million Coders’ program’ once given the nod in the upcoming election.

The program, he said, will benefit some one million Ghanaian youths and give them hope to live fulfilling lives.

“We’re calling it the ‘One Million Coders’ program. This program will train them in software development including coding and programming. And these young Ghanaians, in turn, will build our new economy, generate well paid jobs for many of us and also help change Ghana forever”.

Speaking in an interview, he intimated that the youthful population are deserving of an enabling environment to indeed realize their utmost potential.

“We must provide them with the normal conditions that will make their 21st Century living fulfilling so that they can realize their full potential”.

John Mahama highlighted that his party once given the green light to govern the country yet again will build “a next-generation infrastructure, healthcare system, education system as well as a next-generation agricultural system.”

“If you are a young person, dare to hope because the NDC is here to support your dreams”.

Elsewhere, the former President has expressed concern over the ruling NPP government’s response to the Western Togoland secessionist group.

The NDC flagbearer says President Akufo-Addo and his government’s response on the matter has been poor.

“It’s clear that this President hasn’t taken this matter seriously. I mean the whole government, the security services, it’s like they have a very lackadaisical attitude towards the issue of Western Togoland”.

His comments comes after the President pressed citizens to remain calm as security agencies are dealing with the matter.

President Akufo-Addo had stated that, “they’ve started [acting] already and we’ve seen results. If I panic, the country panics and that’s not the purpose of leadership”.

That notwithstanding, Mr. Mahama, contrarily maintains that Ghanaians do not need the response expressed by the president.

“Our Constitution makes it clear that we must protect the territorial integrity of Ghana; it’s one of the most serious things that the Constitution deals with. And that’s why when I was President, I did not sleep over that Maritime boundary issue”.

“I think that the president must sit up and make sure that the national security apparatus is working properly and pick intelligence and act before those people do anything else”.

Currently, the country is grappling with incessant disorder being displayed by a group purported to be members of the Western Togoland Restoration Front who are fighting for the independence of some parts of the Volta Region.

The recent attack was launched at the Ho STC yard where they burnt two out of 11 buses parked at the yard.

31 persons were picked up by the security apparatus last Friday after the group allegedly launched a simultaneous attack on 2 police stations in Aveyime and Mepe.
