Tottenham Chelsea ends in stalemate

Tottenham ground out a 0-0 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, a result that lifted them top of the Premier League on goal difference.

Top spot in the Premier League was at stake as Chelsea Manager, Frank Lampard and Jose Mourinho renewed their managerial rivalry, but goalmouth action was lacking on an afternoon where defences came out on top.

Tammy Abraham passed up three scoring opportunities in the second half before Mason Mount and Olivier Giroud saw late efforts saved by Hugo Lloris, but Chelsea rarely threatened as Spurs produced a trademark Mourinho defensive display.

The draw saw Spurs drop points away from home for the first time this season, but the point was enough to move them above champions Liverpool on goal difference at the top of the table. Chelsea, who are now unbeaten in 14 in all competitions, remain two points back in third.

Manchester United fought back from two goals down at half time to secure a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory as Edinson Cavani’s double rescued Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side at Southampton.

Jan Bednarek’s header and James Ward-Prowse’s stunning free-kick sent Southampton in at the break with a two-goal lead, but United, who were forced into bringing Dean Henderson on at half-time in place of the injured David de Gea, hit back in the second half.

Cavani – also a half-time substitute, replacing Mason Greenwood at the break – set up Bruno Fernandes for United’s first before the Uruguayan’s 74th-minute header brought the sides level.

There was time for even more drama as Cavani swooped in stoppage time to break Southampton hearts and rescue what looked an unlikely three points for United.

Defeat means Southampton stay fifth, while the three points take United, who move into the top half, up to seventh, five points behind league leaders Liverpool with a game in hand.

Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence continued Arsenal’s dismal home form as Wolves left the Emirates with a 2-1 win, with Raul Jimenez taken to hospital suffering what appeared a serious head injury.

Jimenez was left unconscious following a clash of heads with David Luiz inside the opening minutes at the Emirates, leading to a 10-minute stoppage, but Wolves never looked back from the early loss of their talismanic forward to win at Arsenal for the first time since 1979.

Poor defending allowed Neto to fire in the rebound from an Adama Traore cross but the Gunners levelled from a rare first-half attack when Gabriel nodded in Willian’s corner shortly after.

Brilliant individual play from Podence restored the visitors’ lead before the break (42), and despite an improved second-half performance from Mikel Arteta’s side they fell to their third home defeat in a row.

mahrez hatrick
Mahrez celebrates hat-trick against Burnley.

Riyad Mahrez scored a hat-trick as Manchester City steamrolled Burnley 5-0 in their finest performance of the season so far.

The winger fired the hosts into a sixth-minute lead from a flowing move which would encapsulate City’s performance against woeful Burnley, who would go on to suffer their fourth successive 5-0 defeat at the Etihad.

Mahrez netted his second midway through the half from a poorly-defended throw-in, and Benjamin Mendy weighed in with his first Premier League goal shortly before the interval with a smartly-timed volley from a tight angle.

After the break, Ferran Torres fired in from close-range before Mahrez completed his hat-trick with a header from Phil Foden’s cross.

Pascal Gross’ controversial injury-time penalty, awarded after a VAR intervention, gave Brighton a 1-1 draw against champions Liverpool.

With the game at 1-0 heading into stoppage time, Andrew Robertson was adjudged to have kicked the foot of Danny Welbeck in the box, and after going over to the pitchside monitor, referee Stuart Attwell awarded the spot-kick, despatched down the middle by Gross.

Brighton had already missed a first-half penalty – Neal Maupay struck a penalty wide after Neco Williams had brought down Aaron Connolly (20) – before Diogo Jota looked to have given Liverpool the victory, dancing past two challenges before finding the bottom corner (60), his eighth strike in eight Liverpool games.

The result means Liverpool are second on the league table, behind Tottenham on goal difference whiles Brighton sit 16th with 10 points from 10 games.

Leeds United claimed their first Premier League win at Goodison Park as Raphinha’s late stunner saw off Everton 1-0 in a game packed full of chances but not goals.

In a game which saw the two sides create a combined 38 attempts on goal, the Brazilian produced the decisive moment of quality as he opened his Leeds account with a brilliant drilled effort into the bottom corner 11 minutes from time.

Everton, who had two goals ruled out for offside in the first half, were indebted to the saves of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for keeping them in the game as long as they were, but Raphinha’s strike condemned the Toffees to a fourth defeat in five as they missed the chance to climb up to third in the Premier League.

Callum Wilson and Joelinton scored late goals as Newcastle returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace after a defeat to Chelsea last time out.

Just when Palace and Newcastle looked destined for a stalemate at Selhurst Park, Joelinton’s clever flick released Wilson through on goal, and the striker marked his return from his hamstring injury with a composed finish through the legs of Vicente Guaita to give the Magpies the lead two minutes from time.

Palace’s faint hopes of salvaging anything from the game were extinguished in the final minute as Joelinton made up for a host of earlier missed chances when his shot deflected in off Gary Cahill to seal the Newcastle victory.

gallager
Gallagher scores only goal in West Brom win. Image: Getty

West Brom claimed their first Premier League win of the season as Conor Gallagher’s fine strike secured a 1-0 victory over wasteful Sheffield United, who stay bottom.

Gallagher took advantage of some lax marking from a half-cleared corner to beat Aaron Ramsdale with a clinical finish from 20 yards, to set up a win which lifts the Baggies out of the relegation zone and up to 17th.
