The Euphoria, NPP’s Big Win

Flag of the New Patriotic Party

Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have thrown themselves on the street in exhilaration of the big win of the party.

After the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa declared incumbent Akufo Addo as winner of the 2020 presidential elections, party members and supporters could not contain their joy hence took to the streets to dance off their joy.

Shots across the country as of dawn of Wednesday, December 9, 2020 shows major jubilations going on as the news of their big win remains fresh in their ears .

Addressing the nation from his Nima residence, President-Elect Akufo Addo indicated that some presidential candidates had conceded and called to congratulate him on his re-election, but did not say if his main competitor had called or not.

President elect of the republic, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo thanked the Ghanaian people for the confidence reposed  in him and as such, given him “four more years to do more” for the country.

He however cautioned party faithful’s to celebrate the party’s win but should be in moderation as COVID-19 still lingers on. He also admonished his supporters not to engage in any activity that will incite violence.

He pledged to “still work as hard as he did in the past four years” so that the country will achieve the development it seeks.

On the other side of the coin, the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and some of its members are still in denial of the results declared by the EC. The party had initially assured its members of the big win but the EC’s results ripped the band off their hope to win the presidential seat.

On Tuesday, the opposition NDC in a press conference admonished its supporters to go out and jubilate because according to the general secretary of the party, they had won the elections and their supporters could go out and celebrate the victory.

Whiles many have criticized the utterances of the NDC’s leadership, the party continues to demonstrate a sound believe that there were some illegal happenings that happened during the election.

The results of the 2020 election mean that there is a battle for the majority in parliament. Per certified results from the electoral commission, no party has the required 138 parliamentary seats to gain the majority in parliament.

At their victory speech, the NPP stated that they would be contesting the results of some constituencies.

The flagbearer of the NDC has not addressed the nation as of now. This leaves many observers in a fix as Mr. Mahama has officially not conceded to the EC’s results or otherwise.

However, Honorable Haruna Iddrisu on behalf of the NDC has rejected the results of the EC in a press conference held in the late hours of Wednesday, December 9, 2020.

It is notable to say that, while stronghold constituencies of the main opposition NDC, such as parts of Osu, Ada, and Akwatia are in utter silence; places like Nima, Bantama, and Kibi are in high spirit as the jubilations heighten.
