NDC’s Analysis of 2020 Electoral Results

NDC’s Analysis of 2020 Electoral Results

John Dramani Mahama - NDC presidential candidate

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) intimates that, through an analysis of the presidential election results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson, Jean Mensa, and the subsequent update of the results on the Commission’s website indicates that the figures of the EC do not tally.

The analysis which is said to have been commissioned by the presidential candidate of the party, John Dramani Mahama, was led by Dr. Justice Moses Aheto, a Statistician and lecturer at the University of Ghana.

Dr. Aheto started by comparing the number of votes allocated to President Akufo Addo and candidate Mahama on the 9th December declaration and the subsequent update on the 10th of December.

He indicated that “if you look at the valid votes allocated to Nana Akufo Addo in the 2020 presidential election, the valid one given to him in the first declaration by the EC on the 9th of December is 6,730,413. The second votes allocated to him per the release of the EC on the 10th of December; candidate Akufo Addo had a vote of 6,730,590.”

Dr. Aheto further said if this figure is juxtaposed onto the total votes cast per the EC, candidate Akufo Addo is going to have a percentage of 50.098 percent, which does not tally with the 51.215 percent stated by the Electoral Commission. This, he said, creates a contradiction in the work of the EC.

He went on to note an increase of 177 valid votes for candidate Akufo Addo on the later update of results by the EC, while candidate Mahama suffered a reduction of 1,707. He mentioned that, not only candidate Mahama suffered the reduction but the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Party also lost 63 valid votes per the results update by the EC.

Dr. Aheto alleged that the reductions were an attempt by the EC to cover up the unmerited increase it gave candidate Akufo Addo while making sure the summation of all the figures reconciles with the stated number of total votes cast. An attempt he said the EC even failed to execute properly.

This analysis comes on the back of candidate Mahama and the NDC rejecting the results declared by the EC chairperson. Candidate Mahama stated that he is unwilling to accept a ‘fictionalized result of a flawed election’ because he believes the people of Ghana voted for him and the NDC to lead the country.

“I am a staunch believer in the experiment of democracy, a system of governance that allows the ultimate decision-making power to rest in the hands of you the good people of Ghana. We, the people who, with an eye toward to future we would like for our dear country, elect representatives to go forward and realize that vision. Government serves at the choice and direction of the people of this great nation.” He added at a press conference.

On the other hand, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Electoral Service for the Electoral Commission advised the NDC and its presidential candidate to track the electoral figures themselves if they doubt the work of the Commission.

“They should check the polling station, constituency, and regional results and they will realize that nothing went wrong. They should follow the collation…I have no doubt about the results; so I will entreat them to go over the figures.” Dr. Serebour stated.
