I LOST ENDORSEMENT DEALS BECAUSE THEY SAY I’M CONTROVERSIAL – SISTER DERBY

Ghanaian musical artiste, Deborah Owusu-Bonsu better known as Sister Derby has lamented that it is becoming difficult for her to get endorsement deals because people think she is controversial.

The ‘Uncle Obama’ crooner made this known during an interview session on a popular radio station.

She went on to reveal that it is mostly the women who sabotage her during board meetings when she is being considered as a brand ambassador for a product. She further asserted that those who see her as being controversial are the ones who don’t understand her art and even don’t know her personally.

“People do not understand my character, they perceive I am controversial, and this has set me back because it has made it difficult for me to get endorsement deals.

“So, let’s say, there is a board meeting and then my name comes up, sadly they are like, oh no, she is too controversial it is mostly women and these are people who don’t know meand don’t understand my art. And then they just say things like that. It affects me in getting the deal or the job; things like that”.

Citing examples on how she lost some endorsement deals, she disclosed that in 2012 when her song ‘Uncle Obama’ was blowing up she had an endorsement deal from a phone company but was later cut off from the deal because they claim the choice of her words in the song was appalling. She went on to talk about how another deal slipped out of her hand because she was touted by a lady on the board as controversial.

“So I remember one time when Uncle Obama was a hit. I had this deal with a phone company and an older person was chosen and they wanted a younger person so that they reached a wider demographics. This was all the way in 2012 when Uncle Obama was blowing up. My name was there in the conversation, and after sometime they called me and said I am a bit controversial because I sang about Banana. Another one was an international alcoholic drink brand, and with that the marketing director of the company was a Nigerian, and he said he had researched on me and thought I was best for the deal. Then at the board meeting a lady again said I am too controversial so I couldn’t get the deal”.

Sis Derby also jokingly opened up on her new relationship after her publicly known relationship with Medikal hit the rock some years ago.

In a jovial manner, she revealed she’s currently dating the father of the very person she broke up with.

She said this after a fan asked her who she is currently going out with after breaking up with the VGMA 2020 Rapper of the Year.

Speaking on her failed relationship, she disclosed that she made the outcome of her relationship with her ex-boyfriendknown, because, she had to let her fans, and followers know the truth.

Sister Derby emphatically stated that her song ‘Kakalika’ love was based on her relationship with her ex-boyfriend and what lead to them breaking up with each other.
