KIA Services Halt As Workers Embark On Strike

Kotoka International Airport

The staff of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) have halted temporarily their withdrawal from providing services at the airport today, following a strike action they took earlier this morning.

According to reports, this has come about as government officials are meeting up with the leadership of the Ghana Airport Company Divisional Union of the Public Services to listen to their concerns.

The government’s representatives meeting with the leadership of the Union are Mr Albert Kan Dapaah, Minister of National Security, Mr Kwaku Asiamah, Minister of Transport and Mr Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations.

Earlier this morning, the staff at the Kotoka International Airport embarked on a strike action which resulted in a halt in the services they provide.

Their action, left some passengers stranded at the Airport, with some international flights being cancelled as the procedures to see them through were not functional. The irate workers this morning also locked out the embattled Managing Director, Mr Yaw Kwakwa, demanding his immediate resignation.

This came on the back of the union issuing a statement directing all general staff to withdraw their services at the Airport today, Friday, 26th February 2021, until otherwise communicated by the Union.

The statement further added that the action had become necessary following the Boards attempt to shelve the report of an investigative committee comprising the Ministry of Aviation, the Board, Senior Management, and the Public Services Workers Union which confirms the allegations of mismanagement and abuse of office levelled against the Managing Director, Mr Yaw Kwakwa.

The union also indicated that, the affected services would include the screening of pre-board passengers and access control, fire and Safety cover for all aircraft, water supply and sewage treatment and Public announcement and flight display.
