Ghanaian singer-songwriter, Yaa Yaa has admonished Ghanaians to support musician’s creativity especially when it’s making an impact in society.
She made this assertion on an Accra-based radio station. The ‘Ibi Money’ crooner intimated that it is saddening when musicians put in a lot of effort into their creative work only for it not to receive the needed attention from the public.
“It’s just heartbreaking and these things can stifle creativity. If you do something creative, and you are doing it to achieve a goal… It’s going to make a general impact on society… It’s worthy of celebration, then, the necessary attention should be given to it”.
She also clarified that she is not advocating for her music to gain attention but for the hard work that artists put into producing a creative project.
“This is not just about me but, I am asking for this for an artist like Adoma, Worlasi, Trigmatic, and others. Because we have amazing work we put out there. But if there is no ‘talkability’ [controversies] around us at that moment then there is no shine on us and our work will suffer a bit”.
YAA YAA’s PERFORMANCE
This follows her stellar performance during the ‘3Music Awards Women’s Brunch’, not receiving the necessary hype that she claims it should have received.
Speaking about her performance, Yaa Yaa disclosed that it was carefully put together as it was geared at sending a message to all women across the globe.
“I had the event team that was willing to do something outside of the box. So, it made it easy to bring my creative abilities to the table. We made sure that the piece we put together was mainly about women. So that we could motivate all the women out there… Also [to] sensitize the industry that they need to include more women in what they do. Because we [women] can put up with these things too”.
She disclosed that the virtual concert was done dynamically just “like how some of the international music scenes hold their virtual concert”.
When asked if she sometimes feels she should be bigger than she currently is she said that: “the goal is to always be better. That is why I always add value to myself every day. I learn how to play other instruments. That is why I am in school studying theatre arts, music, and dance. Because I want to better all the time”.
SURVIVING DURING A PANDEMIC
Speaking about how she has been coping with the pandemic, she said that she recorded some songs and used social media to promote it. She also said she got the opportunity to perform at some shows.
“When we were on lockdown, I decided to engage with my fans more. So, apart from releasing my album ‘Agoo’, I went ahead to record some acoustic sessions with Owraku. Then, we uploaded them on YouTube. So, a lot of people were getting entertainment during that time. We have done a number of shows even within this COVID period. So, it’s been good”.
