Vice President distances from online campaign, focuses on transformation agenda

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has disassociated himself from some campaign posters which has been seen indicating his intentions to contest the 2024 presidential elections.

Dr. Bawumia in a presser this afternoon distanced himself from the campaign saying he does not consent to the posters making rounds.

“The Office of the Vice President has taken notice of the proliferation of posters around the country apparently promoting H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the candidate of the NPP for the 2024 elections.

“For the record, the Vice President has not given his consent to these and other associated activities.”

This comes after social media, in the last few days, was flooded with campaign posters of Dr. Bawumia with ‘Break the 8’ tagline. Some communities also had their walls filled with the posters. These posters are alleged to have been a campaign by the Vice President to announce his intentions to contest in 2024.

Focus on transformation agenda

However, in the statement, Dr. Bawumia also stated that his focus is helping President Akufo-Addo execute his transformation agenda and not focusing on the 2024 presidential ticket.

“The Vice President remains focused on assisting His Excellency the President in the execution of his agenda to transform Ghana. This is where everybody’s focus should be.”

Akoto Afriyie dismiss reports

This response by the Vice President comes days after the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto dismissed reports that he had initiated moves to contest the presidential slot for the ruling New Patriotic Party.

He explained that, he decided to go to Kumasi to have some rest during the weekend to recover from a fever. This, he said, was after attending the budget reading in Parliament on Friday, March 12, 2021.

“As a former MP and a senior member of this government; I accepted to grant audience to some party executives who have been making calls for a meeting. This was to discuss matters concerning the welfare of the party.

“Per the constitution of the NPP, nominations have not been opened for interested candidates to announce their intentions to contest for any position in the party. It is therefore unfortunate for anyone to seek to create the impression that I held a meeting to announce my bid for the “flagbearership” position of the party.”

Early Campaigners Risk Disqualification

The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Freddie Blay has urged members with ambition for various positions in the party not to “steal the start” for they might be disqualified.

He said the party came back from an election that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo won “emphatically with over 500,000 votes difference” but with an almost hung Parliament. He, therefore, says their focus should be on supporting the President to execute his plans for his second term.

Additonally, Mr Blay noted that the party could not act currently but offer advice. He further explained that, none of those whose names had cropped up had personally owned up for the campaign materials. He also revealed that those involved indicated the materials could be from their admirers, opponents or opponents of NPP. Also
