MP Says Finance Minister’s Approval Won’t Stop Him From Exposing His Incompetence

Bolgatanga Central Member of Parliament, Isaac Adongo

The Bolgatanga Central Member of Parliament, Isaac Adongo has intimated that the approval of the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta will not stop him from exposing the Minister’s incompetence in managing the economy and financial sector.

In an interaction with the media, he averred that, although majority of his party members are not happy with his decision, it will still not demoralize him.

“As for Ken Ofori-Atta, we have another four years of battle ahead of us, and we are ready for him. I am not going to be daunted because Ofori-Atta has been approved;and people are asking: why if he was corrupt yet was approved? I must continue to hold the government to account. That will not demoralize me, although I know the majority of my people are not happy. I will continue to do my work.”

The MP who is also a deputy ranking member on the finance committee of Parliament states that he disagrees with the Minority Caucus in the House over the approval of Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister.

He maintained that he has so many doubts about the President’s nominee for the Finance Ministry. Also, the Bolgatanga Central MP insisted that his side should have rejected the nomination of Mr. Ofori-Atta.

“I have stayed out of the media because of the question of why we approved Ken Ofori-Atta. I did not want to drag my name in the mud;when I do not have control over the processes leading to the approval of one of my fiercest critics. He can’t put GHS 100 billion in this room and I will get him out as a Finance Minister,;but that is not my decision.”

Furthermore, Mr. Isaac Adongo described as disappointing the reasons by the minority for the approval of Ken Ofori-Atta as the Finance Minister.

This comes on the back of some supporters of the opposition NDC expressing their disappointment in the NDC members;on the Appointment’s Committee for supporting the approval of Mr Ofori-Atta.

Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu in seconding the motion for the approval of the nominee by consensus;on the floor of Parliament stated that the move is to ensure the minister carries his own cross of economic mismanagement.

However, Mr Adongo said “such a justification is sad and a disappointment.”

Moreover, the Bolgatanga Central MP disclosed that he stayed away from the floor on Monday to register his disapproval of the decision of the minority members of the Appointments Committee.

“I didn’t want to be seen as endorsing somebody I believe is a scam on Ghana. Ken Ofori-Atta epitomizes all that is wrong with our financial and economic sector of Ghana and I am the last person to endorse such a move.

“That is why I wanted the records to show that I was absent, that is why I didn’t even go there to sign.”

Mr Ken Ofori Atta was sworn in as Finance Minister by the President yesterday, March 30, 2021. This comes after Parliament’s approval on Monday.
