Oduma Essan, a Nigerian musician

Oduma Essan, the Nigerian musician who has sued Kuami Eugene for alleged ‘song theft’ has posited that Kuami Eugene is fond of stealing people’s songs and he is warning him to put a stop to it.

Breaking his silence over why he has dragged Eugene to court, Oduma stated that “this is the time to put a stop to this attitude. He therefore justified his move noting that in Ghana, Kuami Eugene is the only artist known for stealing other people’s music.

“StoneBwoy, Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, is that how they copy other people’s song and make it similar? This is the time for him to put a stop to this bullshit. Kuami Eugene is fond of stealing people’s music”.

The Ghana-based Nigerian artiste filed a copyright lawsuit against Kuami Eugene for allegedly plagiarizing his song. Oduma is claiming part ownership of Kuami Eugene’s hit song ‘Show Body’ featuring Falz released on October 9, 2020.

He is, therefore, demanding Ghc120,000 in damages, and has reportedly told the court that among other things, Kuami Eugene plagiarized his title and also used lyrics similar to his. Speaking on the court issue, Oduma stated that “After filing the case, I’ll have to wait for twenty-one days before we will know the next move”.

Oduma further lamented over how his music was doing well before Kuami Eugene released his song. He noted that his version of the song is nowhere to be found ever since Kuami Eugene released his version of ‘Show body’, as Eugene’s song is overshadowing his.

“When I dropped my song ‘Show body’, it was booming and going everywhere. People were calling me and saying my song is trending even in Togo. All of a sudden, Kuami Eugene crossed me with his song.

“What even hurt the most is that he featured an A-list artist from my country [Nigeria] so that you people can overshadow me. Before he released his version of the song, when you search ‘Show body’, my song appears first. But now mine doesn’t appear, it’s Kuami Eugene that appears”.

Oduma Essan further made some allegations against Kuami Eugene. He noted some songs that Kuami Eugene has “plagiarized” to make them his own. He also mentioned that this amounts to the reason why Kuami Eugene will not and isn’t getting any Grammy awards because there is no authenticity in his music. According to Oduma, Kuami Eugene needs to change.

“We have to put a stop to his attitude because it’s not nice.  Just imagine his latest song, ‘Dollar on you’, he used somebody’s lyrics in it. His song ‘Confusion’ is for a guy in Mali. He sang it in French and Kuami Eugene polished it in the English language.  That statement ‘if you wish me well I’ll wish you well’ he took it from Ice Prince. Even his signature sound, he took it from Adani Best. When Adani Best was using that signature sound, Kuami Eugene was still in primary school and then he just took it. And no one did anything about it and they will just use money to cover everything. And they will be projecting the guy.

“If this was how Burna Boy and Wizkid were stealing people’s music, do you think they will be winning Grammy awards? We will not get to that place until we change. He has to change”.

Some people have claimed that Oduma is only seeking attention and that is why he is going to this extent. Touching on this he said “if it’s publicity I want, do you think it’s Kuami Eugene I’ll use for publicity? Who is Kuami Eugene? How many fans does he have? Kumai Eugene is only known in Ghana if you cross the Aflao border, no one knows him”.
