Police bounty on bullion van robbers laugable- Farouk Al-Wahab

International Relations Expert, Farouk Al-Wahab

International Relations Expert, Farouk Al-Wahab, has indicated that the bounty placed on the James Town bullion van robbers by the Police is laughable and might not achieve the results needed.

Speaking in an interview, he noted that investigations into the robbery and the murder of the Police man and the trader may end abruptly because the robbers can compete with the amount the police has placed on them as bounty.

“The bounty placed on the bullion van robbers by the Police is laughable. No insider in the camp of these robbers will be willing to give them up for a paltry Ghc20,000 from the Police. The robbers themselves with the money at their disposal now can outbid the Police. If the robbers are giving out more money than the bounty placed on them, how can the police arrest them?”

Farouk Al-Wahab

Comparing the bounties of other countries to that of Ghana, he stated that the bounty from the Ghana Police is not attractive.

“In the US, a bounty as high as US$25 million can be placed on just one criminal so how can Ghana Police just place GHc20,000 on the heads of these robbers? They will not achieve any results, it is a joke. How can someone kill a Police officer for the Police to place such a small sum on their heads as bounty?”

His comments comes on the back of the Ghana Police Service placing a bounty of ¢20,000 on gunmen who shot to death a Police officer and a trader during a robbery incident involving a bullion van at Adedenkpo, a suburb of James Town in Accra on Monday.

The Service’s Director of Public Affairs, Supt. Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman stated that although they are working earnestly to apprehend the criminals, they are calling on the general public to give information that would lead to the arrest of the culprits to receive the reward. She however added that the identity of the informant will be confidential.

Meanwhile, a bullion van narrowly escaped a robbery attack on Thursday, June 17, 2021,;at Gomoa Dominase in the Central Region. This happened just three days after a similar incident was recorded at Jamestown in Accra.

According to reports, the van driver managed to elude the suspected armed robbers who had tried to ambush the vehicle. The incident happened around 4:00pm, about 500 meters away from the Okyereko Police station.

The robbers also reportedly placed leaves on the highway to trick the driver into thinking an accident had occurred on the stretch, compelling him to slow down as he approached the scene.

In the process, the robbers opened fire at the vehicle. However, they were unable to stop the van. The robbers fled after the failed attempt and run into a nearby bush.

Although the windscreen of the bullion van was damaged, no casualty was recorded. The bullion van is currently at the Winneba Police Station.
