Invest in artificial intelligence to fight crime- KTU Pro-Vice Chancellor

The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Koforidua Technical University (KTU), Professor John Owusu, has admonished government to invest in artificial intelligence to help deal with the spate of crime in the country.

Speaking with the media, Professor John Owusu, stated that with this, government can help fight crime with modern technology.

He said this at the showcase of a locally made traffic light which also serves as a security system made by students of the University. This innovation birthed by some students of the university is to help enhance the security system of the school.

“We call on government to support us so that this technology which is home grown technology could be made available on a larger scale in this country to be utilized for security purposes that in the end the nation as a whole can benefit from this technology.”

On the back of the rising rate of crime across the country,;security has over the weeks become a major concern leaving citizens questioning the Security Service’s line of work. In this regard,;he called for government to invest in technical university across the country;to be able to put up more innovations to help fight crime.

Police Command arrests 215 suspected criminals

Meanwhile the Accra Regional Police Command in the quest to curb the rising rate in crime has embarked on an enhanced operation in Accra and have arrested 215 suspected criminals.

The operation follows recorded cases of violent crimes in Accra, particularly a bullion van attack which led to the killing of a policeman and a woman on Monday, June 14 at Jamestown, the Pig Farm robbery, and the killing of a 43-year-old man, as well as the Honeysuckle forex bureau attack and shooting.

The three-day operation which began on Thursday,;June 17, 2021, and ended on Sunday, June 20, 2021, rounded up 17 women amongst the 215 suspects. Also

Speaking on the issue, Accra Regional Police Command PRO,;DSP Afia Tengey indicated that the ages of the suspects range between 17 and 52 years. It also revealed that various narcotics were intercepted during the operation.

“The areas of focus for the exercise include Korlebu,;Tesano, Amasaman, Nima, Dansoman, Abokobi, Accra central, Teshie, Madina, Bastona, Jamestown, Osu and Lakeside. The 3-day operation forms part of efforts to fight violent crimes, drug peddling, and street robberies.

“The Police mostly intercepted wrapped narcotics substances, sharp implements, mixtures of concoctions laced with narcotics, tramadol, etc. The operation also targeted and impounded 168 motorbikes, believed to be used in facilitating the robberies.”

Suspects detained and undergoing investigation

DSP Afia Tengey further said the arrested suspects have been detained and are undergoing various levels of screening for possible connection to cases under investigation.

The Accra Regional Police Command further assured that it remains resilient and assured members of the public of providing maximum security as it opens its doors for continuous public cooperation and volunteering of useful information in stemming the tides.
