Repairing damaged Upper West roads to cost about Ghc50 million- Roads Minister

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, has disclosed that Government will spend about GH¢50 million to repair eight roads damaged by flash floods in the Upper West Region on Thursday, August 12, 2021.

The Minister said government will do all it can to fast track the project due to the urgency it requires.

“Government is going to spend almost GHS50 million to undertake these emergency works. I have had a look at the report and have had the scope of work clearly defined.

“Because of its urgency, the President and government will do all it takes to fast track the processes.”

The Minister further indicated that the stipulated amount will be used in the repairing of the Yiziri road between Nadowli and Yagha; the road between Guoriyiri and Nadowli; the road just before Daffiema on the Sambo-Daffiema road and the road between Fian and Bussie.

“The other roads are the road between Serekpere and Guoriyiri; Dapuori, which lies between Nadowli and Jirapa, Duong on the Sambo – Daffiema road,;low lying areas on the gravel road between Fian and Daffiema and;the road cut on the gravel road between Daffiema and Nadowli.”

He also indicated that,;the repair works would be done by four construction firms namely; PW GHANEM Limited, Mawums Limited, Maripoma Enterprise Limited and Ashcal Investment Limited.

The Minister made the disclosure during a meeting with representatives of;the aforementioned construction firms and engineers of the Roads Ministry in Accra to assess the scope of work to be carried out.

Mr. Amoako-Atta further said the four contractors selected out of twenty contractors was due to their proximity to the affected areas.

That notwithstanding,;the Minister revealed that the remaining contractors had communicated their willingness to support in any capacity should their assistance be needed later on.

“The repairs would include; site clearance and demolition, earthworks, concrete works, road pavement works and road surfacing works.”

The Minister also said immediately the incident happened,;a high powered technical team was deployed to the Upper West Region to assist personnel over there.

Mr Amoako-Attah then urged the contractors to commence work today,;Tuesday, August 24, 2021, adding that Government would provide the needed resources for the mobilization of their equipment to the sites.

He also assured them that Government would honor all financial commitments to ensure that the work was completed as soon as possible.

Also speaking at the meeting, Mr Wumbei Fuseini,;Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mawums Limited,;expressed appreciation to Government and the Roads Minister for the confidence reposed in them.

He then assured that the work will be done to help repair the damaged roads on time.

Some parts of the Upper West Region were on Thursday,;August 12, 2021, thrown into a state of disarray after a torrential rainfall which lasted over 12 hours left hundreds of commuters stranded.

Major bridges on the Wa-Hale road that connect the Nadow-Kaleo district; Jirapa, Lawra, and the Nadom municipalities to Wa, the Upper West regional capital, were affected while portions of the already deplorable Wa-Tumu road were also washed off.
