Security Expert Urges Strict Enforcement of COVID-19 Laws

Security expert, and Executive Director for Jatikay Centre for Human Security and Peace Building, Adib Saani

Security Analyst, Adib Saani, has stated that the nation needs to find ways of reducing the high possibility of perpetrators not being caught for committing crimes.

Speaking on the recent crimes and murder issues being on the rise, he stated that because some abuses are hidden and not legally dealt with, people in turn think they can do as they please.

“We need to reduce the possibility of people not getting caught when they perpetuate crimes. Sometimes people go through a lot in their homes and domestic issues and sometimes when they try reporting they tell them to make it a family case. When it happens again and the people react in a different manner then we begin to bite our fingers. A lot of people are incentive to go into crime because they think they will be left to go off the hook.

“J.B Danquah was killed, nobody has caught them Fenerk Okyere was killed no one has been caught them. So, if I also kill, the probability that I will be caught is very low.”

“When you look at 2017, the murder rate went up by 600 persons. It keeps fluctuating and we have never had the murder rate coming below 500.”

Adib Saani

He however posited that, there are numerous murder cases that go unreported. He said the assuming nature of Ghanaians sometimes do not allow for the various deaths to be probed.

“For us Ghanaians, when we see that someone is hanging on a tree dead, we just say the person has committed suicide. When we see poison beside a dead person, we say its suicide. For us Muslims, immediately you die we have to bury you and you are not subjected to any form of checks”.

Adib Saani

He further stated that, the reasons for the rising crime rate is also due to persons not questioning the cause of deaths. This, he described, as distressing.

Psychological issues contribute to crimes

Also speaking on the issues of murder in the country, Dr. Wiafe Akenten, a Social Psychologist, stated that psychological issues play a part in these crimes.

“Most of these cases come from someone who has crossed the line between normality and abnormality. It also comes from someone who’s societal restrain has been removed psychologically.

“When we say psychopathology, we don’t necessarily mean someone who is running naked in the streets and picking food from the garbage. It’s our thought process and what we do.”

Dr. Wiafe Akenteng

He also attributed the recent crimes to certain persons having the attitude of dominance.

“They exude this attitude by bullying and all that. But one other aspect is when they are able to overcome others. In this context, they just kill people and they feel good. Will a normal human being feel good for killing another? No!”

Dr. Wiafe Akenteng

He said for such people, after undertaking such devious acts, they feel good about it because they are not psychologically affected. He added that these acts shouldn’t be normalized because it is criminal and a sign of deviant behavior of individuals who have gone off their minds.
