GHALCA Women Football Grabs GH¢ 100, 000 from ADB

ADB Boss Presenting Cheque

The Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) has presented a cheque to the tune of One Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢ 100, 000.00) to the Ghana League Clubs Association’s (GHALCA) in support of the development of women’s football in the country.

The donation was in fulfilment of the ADB Bank’s pledge at a fund raising event under the auspices of the First Lady of Ghana, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo at the inaugural edition of the First Lady’s Cup. According to the bank, the donation is expected to help contribute towards the development of Women’s Football as well as the establishment of the first ever Women’s School of Soccer and Excellence in West Africa.  

Presenting the cheque at the Bank’s Head Office in Accra, the ADB Managing Director, Dr. John Kofi Mensah noted that the donation is part of the Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility to support sports, especially women sports to positively impact society.

“We support the call by the First Lady, for Corporate Ghana to support the development of women football in the country.”

According to Dr. Kofi Mensah, women football equally deserve the same attention as men football since it presents an avenue for more women to influence society and serve as role model in their various localities.

“Just as many young men have become impactful in society as a result of playing football, giving equal attention to female football will also create more role models in our society”.

Dr Mensah pledged the commitment of the Bank to support other areas of interest to ensure female football also develop up to an enviable level just like that of their male counterparts.

The President of GHALCA, Mr. Kudjoe Fianoo commended the ADB Bank for the gesture and assured the Management of the Bank that the funds would be utilized for its intended purpose.

“We are going to commit the funds into the development of women football in the country to make sure we reap from it as a nation.”

The First Lady Raises Fund to Support Women Football

At a ceremony last month, the First Lady raised over one million cedis (GH¢ 1,250,000) for the development of women’s football in the country through cash and pledges from Individuals and Corporate Organizations.

Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo stated that the development of women football must begin from the little children.

“If we must develop women’s football, we must start with building a solid foundation. I am excited that the Ghana Football Association, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Education are pursuing a school programme to develop the girl child’s football talent In line with FIFA’s book for boots project.”

Commending GHALCA’s efforts to make football administration more inclusive by adding a woman to its Executive Council, the First Lady also called for the introduction of quota’s in women’s football administration in the country.

When it comes to corporate social responsibilities, ABD has been doing well. It can be recalled that the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) also donated an amount of One Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢100,000.00) to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) as sponsorship for their 23rd GJA Awards ceremony.
