Expedite Process of Investigating Withheld WASSCE Results

SHS students writing WASSCE

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called on the West African Examination Council (WAEC), to as a matter of urgency, expedite the process involved in coming out with their conclusions on the withheld results of some 2021 WASSCE candidates.

The Union in a statement indicated that its call is to enable the affected students know their chances of furthering their education and prepare adequately for it.

According to NUGS, the act over the years, has always left the students in a dilemma and weakened their hopes for a tertiary education. NUGS against this background suggested to WAEC that all investigations relating to examination malpractices should be fully dealt with before results are released in subsequent years.

“The Union has taken notice of the publication by the West African Examination Council (WAEC), indicating the release of the 2021 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results. We call on WAEC, as a matter of urgency, to expedite the process involved in coming out with their conclusions to enable the affected students to know their chances of further education”.

NUGS doesn’t endorse examination malpractice

NUGS posited that under no circumstance does it endorse any form of examination malpractice but believes it is increasingly becoming a new norm for WAEC to withhold result of students who sit for the Examination on yearly basis. This, according to NUGS, is a norm it refuses to accept.

“According to the release on 8th December, referenced WAEC/PRO.PRESS/ Vol.3/105 and signed by the Council’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Agnes Teye-Cudjoe. 3,667 candidates out of the total 446,352 and scripts of candidates from 194 schools in certain subjects have withheld pending final findings into the investigation of all forms of Examination malpractices in the course of the examination as ensued”.

NUGS

NUGS also used the medium to congratulate all students who sat for this year’s examination and advised them to carefully choose the right courses to suit their intellectual ability in their pursuit for further education.

WAEC

The Union then commended the various traditional universities for taking steps to “admit” students from the 2021 WASSCE Examination into the upcoming academic year. It therefore sought for an extension of the application deadline as provided by the various Universities, to make room to accommodate all challenges experienced by the students who are under investigation and some that are associated with the application process.

NUGS assured that the Union would continue to use all appropriate means to address these concerns with regards to the withheld results and the application process.

The statement from NUGS follows WAEC withholding of the entire results of 3,667 candidates pending investigations into various cases of examination malpractices that were detected during and after the examination.

The entire results of 174 candidates who sat for the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), were also cancelled. This was disclosed by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) in its 2021 provisional WASSCE results.
