Bawku Shootings Not Acts of Terrorism- Bawku MCE

Police personnel on patrol

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bawku, Hamza Amadu, has intimated that the recent shooting in Bawku is not an act of terrorism.

Speaking on the shootings which took the lives of two people, Mr. Amadu disclosed that it is rather an extension of the existing feud between the Mamprusi and the Kusasi factions.

“I don’t think it’s an act of terrorism. It is part of the conflict. It’s definitely part of the conflict.”

Hamza Amadu

The MCE intimated that the bandits responsible for these acts are made up of feuding factions in the Bawku municipality. He stated that, although the bandits may belong to these two factions, there may be others hiding behind it to perpetuate evil.

“I can confirm to you that some others have joined forces to fight on behalf of these two factions.”

Hamza Amadu

He indicated that the Police is currently conducting investigations into the incident. Two people, he disclosed, have been arrested in relation to the shootings that took place.

Two people have been shot dead and two others are said to have escaped some shootings in Bawku. Some security experts have described this act as a renewed volatile security situation in Bawku in the Upper East Region.

The first victim reportedly died on Monday whiles the second died yesterday, January 11, 2022. As it is unclear what sparked the latest spree of shooting, many have linked it to the old age conflict that exists in the municipality.

Account of Bawku shooting

Hamza Amadu, giving an account of the incident stated that the information as to the persons being shot on the same day is not entirely correct. He clarified that victims were shot at different times so if it’s being said that two people have been gunned down, it would appear as if they were at the same point when the unfortunate incident happened.

According to the Bawku MCE, the first victim who was a driver stopped to pick up some cereals to transport to tamale where he was shot dead.

“Yesterday, one Mushie man who is a driver to cargo vehicle was moving out of Bawku in the night but he left before the curfew hours and he went to a village named Ambros on the way to Zebila then through to Bolga. The bandits pounced and shot at him.”

Hamza Amadu

Giving an account of the second shooting, the MCE disclosed that it happened when a section of Muslims were observing their afternoon prayers. He revealed that the incident happened at a suburb of Bawku in between two towns named Ndandi and Zongu.

“Another bandit came with a gun and shot at the crowd which led to two people being injured on the spot. They were rushed to the hospital where one died with the other sustaining injuries.”

Hamza Amadu

The Bawku MCE indicated that the second victim who sustained injuries is currently responding to treatment at the hospital.

Hamza Amadu further disclosed that aside the shootings, some passengers in a vehicle using the Bawku route were also attacked by these bandits.

“It will surprise you that those people in the Trotro had a police escort and those bandits again exchanged fire with the Police. They shot at the driver who is currently responding to treatment at the Bawku hospital”.
