Government Has Performed To Improve The Nation- Nhyiaeso MP

Dr. Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso and Member of the Finance Committee of Parliament

Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso and Member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, Dr. Stephen Amoah, has intimated that government has performed to improve the nation and the economy.

Responding to claims that the opposition of the E-levy is due to government not managing the economy well, he indicated that it is not the case.

According to Dr. Amoah, if one wants to be sure how a government is governing an economy, it is based on the performance parameters. This, he said, he can assure that about 90% of all these parameters that government took over from the previous administration, has been improved upon.

“We picked interest rate and lending rates in our markets with interest rate at almost 40 per cent. Now you can get interest rate in Ghana around 21 percent. We picked inflationary rate around 15.4 percent, now it has been a single rate of 7 percent.”

Dr. Stephen Amoah

Dr. Stephen Amoah averred it is not the fault of the government with regards to the state of the economy. He explained that GDP growth has become sluggish because of the impaired productivity as a result of the sluggish performance due to market activities and the industry.

“This is a fact and not because of any government. No professor can come and say our GDP is not growing because government is not performing the way it has to.”

Dr. Stephen Amoah

The Nhyiaeso MP’s comments follow the assertion by the former CPP flagbearer, Ivor Green Street, that government has not managed the economy well hence, the reason for the opposition of the E-levy.

Productivity has improved

According to Dr. Amoah, for about 22 months now, productivity as a country has improved uncontrollably. However, he stated that, since the nation is not getting enough revenue generation the way it wanted as a result of the market activities, government had to resort to more debt finance and borrowing because government had to perform more obligations.

“This is the only government that has done that in terms of strengthening the existing policies both in terms of kind and cash”

Dr. Stephen Amoah

The Nhyiaeso MP averred that the former CPP flagbearer doesn’t fully understand the E-levy initiative and is basing his argument on social media propaganda.

“Ideally, we should compare when this government took over in 2017 to where these parameters are today. I’m not saying we have been 100 percent in all these areas. I am not saying we’ve not been through hardship but with the aggregate performance of this government, any person who is suffering from incompetence and just wants to display intellectual dishonesty will attest to the fact that we’ve done well as a government.”

Dr. Stephen Amoah

Dr. Amoah further questioned why the opposition party will determine what government should do in terms of passing the E-Levy. He averred that Ghanaians voted for this government and gave it a mandate and as a result should allow the NPP govern this country and then in 2024, “if they are not happy with the performance of the government, they can vote against it”.

“We will also pass the E-levy. So, the opposition party is determining what a government should do? My brothers in opposition, if they think the E-levy is not good for Ghanaians they would have asked us to even pass it so that they gain power but they know the E-levy is coming to solve most of the problems. They know the E-levy is cool that is why the NDC is behaving that way.”

Dr. Stephen Amoah

The Nhyiaeso MP therefore appealed to stakeholders to allow government pass the E-levy and see the outcome.
