Ghanaian gospel musician, Celestine Donkor, has finally cleared the air over accusations that she subtly jabbed her colleague, Empress Gifty, while passing comments about spending $40,000 on shooting a music video.

Celestine in an interview, opined that she would use $40,000 money spent by Empress Gifty, on a music video, to start a rice business. Celestine’s comments sparked several debates on social media with some accusing her of subtly ‘shading’ Empress Gifty.

Celestine Donkor in reaction to the accusation lamented she has been misinterpreted. According to her, there is no ill-feeling between Empress Gifty and herself.

“My answers and opinions in that interview have nothing to do with Empress Gifty. It was a general question asked and I gave my opinion. Unfortunately, it has been misinterpreted and taken out of context. I want to assure you that this will never create enmity between Empress and I. We are really cool, so fans of Empress Gifty and myself, be assured”.

Detailing the bond she has with Empress Gifty, Celestine Donkor recounted how the gospel singer supported her during a concert she organized.

“When I was doing my EP launch, I needed some few artists to be there and she was one of them. She came to support beautifully… It is just to establish that we are cool, so please just pray for us”.

Background to the story

It can be recalled that Celestine Donkor, in a recent interview, opined that she would spend the $40,000 her colleague, Empress Gifty, used to make her music video to invest in rice business. According to her, although it is important to spend money to make quality music videos and produce great songs, $40,000 is too much money for only one music video.

Celestine Donkor revealed that currently, the most amount people spend on music videos is between 12,000 Ghana Cedis and 25,000 Ghana Cedis.

This comes after Gospel artiste, Empress Gifty, claimed she spent about $40,000 on her newly released music video for her song, ‘Eyɛ Woa’. According to Empress Gifty, she and her team are always striving to put out quality work, and this urge usually overrides concerns for money. Empress Gifty revealed that the recent cost of $40,000, covered her costumes and the production among others.

“I want quality things, I want beautiful things”, Empress Gifty said, explaining why she spent huge sums of money on her videos.

However, Celestine Donkor who emphasized that she would have used the money differently, explained that she would make more money selling and importing rice than spending that much money on a music video.

Fans reacted to Celestine’s comment with one stating “I remember calling one director for a shoot, he said 45,000ghc per video. I can buy acres of land in some village to start a company because I was shooting 3 videos. 135,000 Ghana cedis”

Another who was in support of Celestine wrote: “But she’s[Celestine] telling the truth, in a country where the system doesn’t work, no royalties, no better formidable records label, poor marketing structures and lack of investments returns, you would be a big fool to invest $40k in a music video. What message at all do you want to pass across in the video?”
