Man Gets 2kg Dumbbell Stuck in his Bum, Doctors Operate by Hand

A man with shocked face

A surgeon had to use his forearm to manually extract a 2kg dumbbell from a man’s anal verge after he had got it stuck in his rectum.

The unidentified 54-year-old Brazilian man turned up at a hospital in Manaus complaining of abdominal pain, nausea, and being unable to defecate.

According to reports, after an initial examination struggled to find the cause, and the man being reluctant to reveal what he surely knew was causing his suffering, doctors ordered an X-ray of his abdomen, noting that the man had been “uncooperative” during the physical examination.

That was when everything came to bare. The X-rays revealed a 2kg dumbbell, about 20cm long, which was lodged where the colon meets the rectum.

Doctors sedated the man and tried to remove the weight using surgical tweezers, but were unsuccessful. With no other option, the team decided to perform a “manual extraction”, which involved one unfortunate surgeon using his “forearm” to remove the dumbbell, per reports.

The case appeared in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports and was described as being fraught with “difficulties, but it was a success in the end, with the man being discharged from hospital three days later”.

Doctors noted that the majority of patients reporting items stuck up their bottom were men, by a ratio of 28:1 to females. They disclosed that “sexual gratification” was usually the “greatest motivation”.

While on this occasion the man is not expected to suffer any long-term complications, the authors of the report pointed out that other cases have resulted in internal injuries and faecal incontinence.

Other Weird Cases of ‘Bottom Situations’

Although this is undoubtedly a pretty unique case, there are weirder things that have been found up people’s bottoms by doctors, such as a World War Two artillery shell.

In 2021, a bomb squad was called to an A&E after a patient arrived with an artillery shell wedged up his ‘southern pole’. Medics feared that the anti-tank shell would explode and were forced to call army explosives experts.

The unnamed patient told the hospital that he “slipped and fell” on the 17x6cm projectile that was part of his own military collector’s items. The armor-piercing was later identified as a World War Two 57mm shell that was usually fired from anti-tank guns.

“The guy said he found the shell when he was having a clear-out of his stuff,” a source told local media at the time. “He said he put it on the floor then he slipped and fell on it, and it went up his bottom. He was in a considerable amount of pain. I think he collected military memorabilia”.

Police said they responded to “a report that a patient had presented with a munition in his rectum”.

A spokesman continued: “The item had been removed prior to police arrival and the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were contacted”.
