The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana, (CLOGSAG) has today, May 12, 2022, called off its industrial strike action.

The Association asked its members to resume work after ending the 3-week strike which was embarked on to drive home its demand of the payment of the neutrality allowance allocated to its members by government.

According to the Association, the rationale to step down the industrial action was based on the fact that, the demand for the Ministry of Finance to direct the Controller and Accountant General to effect payment of the agreed allowance, was met on 11th May 2022.

CLOGSAG then notified its members that by the decision taken, all of them should report back to work by Monday, May 16, 2022. The Association further used the opportunity to appreciate the resilience and the commitment of all its members during the period they called on government to attend to its demands.

“It portrays the sordid conditions under which our members have endured all these years. This brings home the fact that the conditions of service being enjoyed now have not been achieved on a silver platter.”

MPs were affected by CLOGSAG strike

Prior to the decision by CLOGSAG, the Vice Chairman of the Local Government Committee of Parliament, Suleman Adamu Sanid disclosed that every Member of Parliament was affected by the strike because there were so many things that the MPs were trying to process but couldn’t do due to the strike action by CLOGSAG.

Mr. Sanid averred that the impact of the strike hit Parliament, as Members of Parliament’s Local Government Committee couldn’t access their Common Fund because Local Government staff who were supposed to help with the documentation were on strike.

Suleman Sanid then indicated that the committee will consider engaging the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) for a permanent solution to the problem and not just resolve it temporarily.

“We are looking at engaging the FWSC because they’ve been in existence for so long and we still have strike actions here and there. We want to engage them to really understand what is still holding them and causing some of these things so that as a country, we can see how to address this. If FWSC doesn’t have the necessary legislative tools, we can do that so that, this perennial issues of strikes here and there will be a thing of the past.”

Members of CLOGSAG began an indefinite strike on Thursday, April 21, 2022 over the non payment of the neutrality allowance. CLOGSAG said it was noted that payment of the Neutrality Allowance they demanded had not been effected as agreed in spite of official reminders and follow ups to the Ministry of Finance.
