The Former Aide to former President, John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has stated that it’s time the government is called out for its performance with regards to how it has handled the economy.

Joyce Mogtari stated that government’s performance has been abysmal and it has also disrespected the same citizens who voted it into power.

“I think we have to call this government out on their abysmal performance. Inflation of 23.6 percent; do you know how it wipes off your capital, your investments? And do you know the fear it generates in the individual citizen at a time where government has absolutely nothing in its coffers?”

Joyce Bawah Mogtari

According to the former Presidential Aide, most of the young people in the country are frustrated. She stated that the frustration is leading some of the youth to threaten to take their own lives. “You know what happened at the Youth Employment programme job fair where they deceived the youth to queue for jobs they knew didn’t exist.”

Joyce Mogtari posited that the only reason why Ghanaians are suffering is due to the unbridled greed of the people in power, their arrogance that is currently being displayed and the total lack of respect for any other Ghanaian. According to her, all the smaller economies around Ghana have done better with regards to maintaining a proper inflation rate in the period of the pandemic.

“When I listened to the Vice President yesterday, he still has the confidence to swipe at his political opponents. At least before President Mahama left power, inflation was not at 23 percent.”

Joyce Bawah Mogtari

The Former Presidential Aide insinuated that nothing appears to be working in Ghana under the current administration. She intimated that from the transport sector to energy, labor and health sectors, there are lots of issues that must be addressed by the government.

Government addresses concerns raised

Countering Joyce Mogtari’s claim, Ellen Ama Adaku, a member of the NPP communications team stated that the government pays attention to the concerns raised by citizens and acts on those that need to be addressed. According to Ellen Adaku, she believes this government is one of the best listening governments the nation has had. “At least there is a reaction always from the government on issues.”

“We are all Ghanaians, we all feel what is going on but these issues were inherited. In 2015 when China was going through problem, Mr. Mahama the then President blamed our problems on China.”

Touching on the current inflation rate and prices of food, she averred that she is not happy because it also affects her pocket. She noted that government informed of such an increase as such, citizens must bear with it. “I expect it to go a bit higher next month before it starts tabling down.”

Ellen Adaku called on government to do something to cushion Ghanaians especially in relation to food prices. According to her, these are times government has to get all Ghanaians involved in finding a solution. She admonished the Agric Ministry to attend to the issues as well.

“My worry is with the Agric and food sector. We are getting information that because of the fertilizer issue, we might have a problem with food security next year? What exactly is the Ministry of Agric doing about it? What are our reserves?”
