Ministries with more than two deputies unnecessary- Dr. Kwame Asante

Political Scientist, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante

Political Scientist, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has intimated that there has been some renewed efforts comparing the previous and the recent delegates’ conference of the New Patriotic Party.

According to Dr. Asah-Asante, the manner in which the NPP conducted its regional executive elections shows that they have done their “home work” well. In his view, everything about the elections went on smoothly.

The Political Scientist averred that the delegates voted for the candidates they want to be in office smoothly with some few challenges in the Northern Region and Greater Accra. This, he stated, gives an indication that the problems that the party hierarchy anticipated was in a way dealt with. “They sent a word round and the people have begun to understand that it is politics and not violence.”

“I can also see renewed efforts on the part of the party to make sure the elections move on smoothly so as to ensure that, those who really want to contest for the flagbearership position, will have a very clean slate to operate from. You can see that deliberate effort on the part of the party to make sure that things went as planned. So, all in all, you realize that some homework has been done.”

However, Dr. Asah-Asante noted that the misunderstandings which took place in some parts of the regions, is not something to be condoned. He urged the party to put in efforts to deal with the problems so it doesn’t affect the quality of the elections going forward.

The Political Scientist averred that it is important because, as the party is preparing towards electing its flagbearer and Parliamentary candidates, it will be faced with more of such violent acts which will result in numerous problems, if not handled well.

“It is a call to duty on the political party to rise up to the occasion so as to not get us into trouble. They have a very critical election such as the one that elects a flagbearer.”

Election outcome not suprising

Dr. Asah-Asante reacting to the outcome of the election indicated that he was not surprised, especially with some Chairmen maintaining their positions. However, he noted that, it is one thing to win the election and another thing making sure the work is done.

“You’ll have a situation where people will be touting or rooting for a particular person, only to go to the polls and disappoint the person. It’s a characteristic of elections so, I am not surprised.”

Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante

According to Dr. Asah-Asante, the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) must be happy at the moment given that some of the executives of NPP in the regions, who were unable to put up any extraordinary performance in the 2020 polls for their party, were retained. In his view, although the NDC must be happy, they have a lot of work to do ahead of the 2024 general elections if they are to win.
