Religious Bodies urged to participate in Green Ghana Project- CCG

Religious leaders

The leaderships of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) and the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) have asked all pastors to commit to the Green Ghana programme slated for June 10, 2022 seriously.

A statement jointly signed by Rev. Dr. Justice Adjei K. Lawson, Vice Chairman, CCG; Rev Dr. Cyril G. K. Fayose, General Secretary, CCG; Most Rev. Philip Naameh, President, GCBC; Rev. Fr. Lazarus Anondee, Secretary-General, GCBC, commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his commitment to continue the Green Ghana Programme.

The statement also encouraged Member Churches to set similar targets for planting trees.

“Where possible, we encourage all churches to mobilize themselves on June 10, 2022, to embark on this project.”

Statement’

According to the statement, reports indicate that between 1990 and 2010, Ghana lost about 33.7 percent of its forest cover to galamsey, farming, and illegal logging, adding that the devastation caused to Ghana’s forests leading to its rapid depletion, is not a good story for the country.

“It is observed that the country’s forests provide a livelihood for the majority of Ghana’s population”, the statement disclosed.

The statement called on the Forestry Commission to support and facilitate the execution of the Green Ghana agenda. “The Commission has the potential to reverse the dreadful loss to our forest cover while contributing to mitigating climate change impact in Ghana,” the statement noted.

The statement commended the Ghana Health Service and the Government of Ghana for the efforts put into the mobilization of resources and public education to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

It appealed to President Akufo-Addo to establish an emergency committee that would swiftly deal with any such pandemic in the future.

The statement urged citizens to continue to observe the Covid-19 hygienic protocols.

“Let us continue to wear our face masks, observe social distancing, wash our hands regularly under running water with soap and use the hand sanitizer frequently. We also entreat all Ghanaians to avail themselves for the Covid vaccination to protect themselves and others”.

Mobilizing for a Greener Future

This year’s event has won the support of many stakeholders spanning from chiefs to institutions.

The Project generally seeks to create a collective action toward restoring degraded landscapes in the country, mitigating climate change, and teaching the youth the values of planting and nurturing trees. It is one of the most significant environmentally related initiatives under the Nana Akufo-Addo-led Administration to improve ecology.

The President of Ghana, H. E Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, at the launch of the 2022 Edition of Green Ghana Day at the Accra International Conference Centre, called on all Ghanaians to actively participate in the event.

The theme for this year’s exercise is “Mobilizing for a Greener Future” and it’s scheduled for June 10, 2022. This year, the Project targets to plant at least 20 million trees of varied species across the country.
