Taxi driver Kidi Emerges Winner at 3Music Awards

Ghanaian singer, Kidi

Ghanaian music star, Kidi has revealed that all his features with other artists have been done pro bono but henceforth the narrative will change.

The A-list singer, who together with his label mate Kuame Eugene, is one the most sort after artists of the New School recently opined in a Twitter Space that he’s going to charge for collaborations.

While interacting in an interview, the serial hitmaker said the economic hardship presently prevailing in the country has informed his irreversible decision.

“You can ask all the artists who have featured me on their songs. I’ve never charged or taken a dime from them. I didn’t say I will not charge for features. I have never done that [before] but right now, with how the economy is going, ‘asesa’ [things have changed]”.

Kidi

Kidi was however quick to add that despite not taking monies for features, he always owns rights to the revenue that accrues from the song, as the copyright laws stipulate.

A representative of EMPIRE, an American distributing, records and, publications incorporation, has disclosed the reason why they selected Ghanaian hip life and afro beats artist, Kidi, for their recent deal.
Kidi, a Ghanaian singer and songwriter.

“Even though I never charge for a feature, the copyrights law gives me the opportunity to receive some of the revenue the music acquires. But I don’t charge for any feature, you can ask those that I have I have featured. I don’t charge for a feature”.

Kidi

In the same vein, the 2022 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards ‘Artist of the Year’, added his voice to the current ‘war’ between a section of Ghanaian musicians in the music space and some TikTok influencers. The brouhaha started after Asantewaa, who happens to be one of the popular TikTok stars said during an interview that currently, they as influencers on the video-sharing app are the ones who help to make songs hits.

She went further to say that any musician who fails to bring their songs to them to promote will end up listening to the song him/herself because it will never go viral. These comments saw her come under a lot of attack on social media and eventually she was forced to apologize and say she was just playing and making a joke.

Despite this apology from Asantewaa, several people backlashed her for making that remark.

KiDi however had a totally different opinion on the issue. According to KiDi, musicians and other industry players in the space should understand that this is the time for TikTok influencers and no one can fight that. He added that changes are bound to come naturally by the law of natural order and that is what is happening with the TikTok influencers because it is currently one of the power tools to promote songs.

KiDi ended that those who are “fighting” these TikTok stars must understand that they are currently part of the music ecosystem and they cannot be ignored.
