Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has revealed that the country has no need for a quick fix but a long-term sustained economic policy.
According to him, the measurement of a policy is not premised only on the outcome but on the effectiveness of the policy propositions that the parties make. He indicated that once the focus is on the outcomes and not the relevance of the solutions that is being put forth, citizens short-change themselves by voting for the temporary outcome which is not sustainable long-term.
“Ghana, given where we are [and] given the structure of our economy, we know that what we need is structural change and the idea that the NPP’s put on the table any day, stands the test of time to be able to get us out of where we are. What we need is not quick fix, we need a long-term sustained economic policy that will in the long run change the structure of the economy.”

Mr Ahiagbah stated that the party has promised to develop the country in freedom and that informs its policies and vision of the NPP for Ghana in election 2024. He revealed that it is based on such policies the “party is positioned to win the 2024 election”.
“So, that is the conversation we are going to have going into 2024 and we are going to be deliberate in making it not to be distracted by the propaganda of the opposition… The reason is quite simple, we are going to encourage a conversation in our country that is focused or centres around ideas… We all know the input of the NPP. It’s a practical approach that we bring to the development of this country and the expectation will be that our opposing party will come to the table with ideas and on that platform; I think that any day, NPP has the superior proposition for Ghana.”

Winning election 2024
The NPP Communications Director explained that in spite of the economic hardship in the country, he doesn’t see any reason why the NPP cannot win the 2024 election. He highlighted that the party is going into the election and will activate all of its advantages to win.
“… I think that the NPP any day will make a good case for itself to win.”

Mr Ahiagbah revealed that any election is “herculean” and one cannot underestimate election as it involves people’s emotions. Nonetheless, he opined that given the history of the NPP, it has always been able to make a case for itself.
“Now, the idea of the economy being central in 2016 was clear, and the reason was that the NPP proposed a superior argument to what the NDC was proposing at the time and that argument is valid today…”

Commenting on government’s resolve to focus on production, Mr Ahiagbah noted that the NPP by its policy position, will prefer not to tax. As such, the idea that it is “moving from taxation to production is a natural position for the NPP”.
“That is our policy stance because we are pro-market and when we are taxing the market, productivity goes down because people are discouraged and you want a situation where the market is elevated, energised and given incentives to produce. But when you get there you’re constrained in an economy that is not as formal as it ought to be that everybody as citizens who needs to be able to pay tax are not being captured.”
