The youth wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the opposition, New Patriotic Party (NPP) to call one the Member of Parliament for Adansi-Asokwa, KT Hammond, to order.

The NDC youth wing condemned the comments made by Mr Hammond following the jeering of President Akufo-Addo during the Global Citizens festival held over the weekend. It indicated that such comments from a “loose talker” will not elicit a response ordinarily. However, his deliberate motive to “denigrate young people of this country” must be called out.

“The New Patriotic Party must call KT Hammond to order. Failure to do so will mean their tacit endorsement of his reckless comments.”

NDC Youth Wing

Contained in a statement signed by the National Youth Organizer of the party, George Opare Addo, it highlighted that this is not the first time Mr Hammond has sought to denigrate the hardworking youth. President Akufo-Addo, it explained, after numerous calls to reshuffle his ministers, “boldly declared the calls were from unemployed youth” and he had “praise singers” defending his comments.

“What we see from that instance, is a deliberate attempt by the NPP to downplay and undermine efforts of young people to demand accountable governance. As we speak, various NABCO cohorts are owed months of payment, National service personnel payments have not been settled, Teacher Trainees and nursing students have not been paid their due allowances. The resultant effect of Akufo-Addo’s failure to provide jobs for young people and improve our economy is what was displayed at Independence Square.”

NDC youth wing lauds activities of the youth

The NDC youth wing lauded the youth for exhibiting sheer grit and courage despite the current economic hardship in the country, visited upon them by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration. Owing to this, it noted that it will be disingenuous for “an old timer” to question the democratic right of the youth to show their disapproval of the President.

“The youth of this country are responsible and hardworking; some of the best start-up businesses in the country are led by young people. Young people who bear the brunt of the incompetence of this government has every right to show their disapproval of government’s failure.”

NDC Youth Wing

The NDC youth wing stated that it expects the government to consider the jeering of the President at the Independence Square as a “free social research” on the mood of the country. From all indication, it emphasized that the country is on the precipice of unrest and government must therefore sit up and act accordingly.

The youth warned that if situations do not improve, the NDC will announce a series of mass actions geared towards mobilizing young people to agitate and picket at the flagstaff house, parliament and other state agencies. It further expressed its relentless in ensuring the future of the youth is not jeopardized by what it described as “grand theft schemes”.

“KT Hammond and his ilk must know that if the current situation in the country does not get any better, any agitation and civil unrest will begin with the political class. He must retract his comment, apologize to the youth and focus on helping his government fix the country.”

NDC Youth Wing

It will be recalled that KT Hammond on September 27, 2022, expressed disappointment over the youth’s reception toward President Akufo-Addo at the Independence Square. He indicated that there are appropriate channels of getting their concerns heard as the event was not a political platform to merit such uproar.
