GFA Announces $2m Deal With MTN As Black Stars Sponsor

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced a one-year sponsorship deal with telecommunications giant, MTN Ghana, as a sponsor of the Black Stars ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 finals.

The deal, which is worth US$2million dollars, was announced on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at the headquarters of the Ghana Football Association in Accra.

In attendance, was President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, and Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif (Hon.). Others included: Executive Council Members Samuel Anim Addo and Nana Sarfo Oduro; Prosper Harrison Addo, General Secretary of the GFA; Samuel Aboabire, Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Football Association and Kwasi Agyemang, Vice Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee.

Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West and Deputy Communications Minister, Hon. George Andah, who is a Member of the Fund Raising Committee, was a special guest.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, CEO of MTN Ghana, Serlom Adadevoh, said the sponsorship is a reinforcement of the company’s faith in the national male senior football team.

Black stars deserve all the support

Serlom Adadevoh explained that the reason why the company is investing is to make the team stronger. He noted that the sponsorship of the Black Stars is a reinforcement of “the faith we have in this nation and in everything that is important to us including our national football assets’’.

“Today, Qatar 2022 is before us. We believe that our Black Stars deserve all the support they need to excel as they take on the rest of the world. As a network of choice and based on our track record with football sponsorships, we deem it a great responsibility to contribute our quota towards building and investing in a formidable team who will go all out to excel and bring back the joy, excitement, and Unity that football brings to our society.”

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup competition, the quadrennial international men’s football championship, contested by the senior national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It is scheduled to take place in Qatar from 20th November to 18th December 2022.

The Black Stars of Ghana, making its 4th appearance in the completion, will play against Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.  Drawn in Group H, Ghana will play its first game against Portugal on the 24th of November, 2022 at 4pm GMT before taking on the Asians on the 28th of November, 2022 at 1pm GMT.

The Black Stars will then play one of the most anticipated matches in the tournament on the 2nd of December 2022 at 3pm GMT against Uruguay, a team that prevented Ghana from becoming the first African nation to reach the last four in the competition’s history.
