I will not blame the minister for roads and highways.

Hon. Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, Former MP for Tema West Constituency

Honorable Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, Former MP for Tema West Constituency, has stated that he will not put blame on the Minister for Roads and Highways for the depleted state of the Tema Highway. He said that there are institutions of state under the ministry which are supposed to be in charge of implementation.

Honorable Titus Glover noted that under President Akuffo Addo’s appointed minsters, the minister for road and highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah is one of the most hardworking ministers.

“He is one of the hardworking and most serious ministers, and I can testify to the works he has done as the minister of roads and highways.”

Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover

According to him, the agencies under the ministry of roads and highways have their own budget that is brought before parliament every year therefore, the Chief Executive of Ghana Highway Authority should be questioned about the poor state of the highway.

“Ordinary trotro drivers, motor cyclists and taxi drivers use this highway so if he sits in his car and uses the highway in its deteriorated form, will he be happy about it? So, for me, let’s take Honorable Amoako-Attah out, and tackle institutions of state who have been given the mandate to implement.”

The Former MP for Tema West Constituency noted that by the close of the day, Honorable Amoako-Attah would take action to tackle the issue of the depleted state of the Tema highway.

No progress on the Tema motorway

On the same discussion panel, Eric Adjei, the Deputy Bono Regional Communications Officer for the National Democratic Party (NDC), stated that no positive progress has been seen on the expansion and maintenance of the Tema Highway. He said the issue was raised in August 2021, but up till date, he has seen no positive improvements on the road in question.

He stated that meagre issues concerning the road such as portholes are being discussed as the point of focus and the main point, which is the extension of the highway, is being ignored. Eric added that the company that was given the contract to extend the road did not have a credible character and he no longer cares about what happens to the road.

“Are they not aware? Don’t they use that road all the time? Sometimes we must learn to speak the truth to people. Honorable Amoako-Attah, which job are the contractors on the motorway doing? Tell Ghanaians, that is what we want to hear.”

Eric Adjei

The minister for roads and highways is the political head, and has the authority to supervise constructions in certain areas therefore, he should be able to do same for the Tema motorway, he said. He suggested that if the work cannot be done, the 570million dollar facility that the ministry took for the expansion of the Tema motorway should be used to subsidize petrol.

The Tema highway, popularly known as the motorway, is one of the oldest constructions of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and it has been in use since the time of construction till now. It is currently being labeled by citizens and media houses as a death trap, as many road accidents occur there due to the deplorable state of the road.
