Johnson Asiedu Nketia is the new Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after defeating the incumbent, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, during the party’s elections held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, December 17, 2022.
The 65-year-old politician, popularly known as General Mosquito, relinquished his 17-year reign as the NDC’s General Secretary to run for the Chairmanship role. Asiedu Nketia garnered 5, 569 votes, followed by Ofosu-Ampofo with 2, 892 votes. Samuel Yaw Edusei had 52 votes while Nii Armah Ashietey obtained 38 votes.
Ahead of the polls, the General Secretary bade farewell to his members and urged all to forgive any transgressions that may have emanated from his office while serving as the chief scribe.
“Let me say a word of farewell to you as I step down today as your General Secretary having served in that position for the past 17 years. I thank you for your cooperation and thank everybody. Those I’ve offended, may the Lord touch your heart to forgive me. The credit I’ve made so far is shared and attributed to the footsoldiers of this country and this party.”

Fifi Kwetey takes over from Asiedu Nketia as NDC’s General Secretary
Meanwhile, Former Ketu South NDC MP, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, will take over from Johnson Asiedu Nketia as General Secretary following a resounding victory at the party’s 10th National Delegates conference on Saturday. He pulled a total of 4, 543 votes to emerge winner.
Fifi Fiavi Kwetey contested with Dr Peter Boamah Otukunor, who served as Mr Nketia’s Deputy and Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, a former Sports Minister.
Confirming his victory in a Facebook post, the jubilant former Deputy Finance Minister in the Mahama administration, said one of his contenders had called to congratulate him.
“My Brother and Comrade Boamah Otokunor called me a few minutes ago to congratulate me. Very gracious of him. I had earlier told him yesterday that I was proud of his competitive campaigning and I repeated same this morning. I reassured him of my complete readiness to work closely with him to make our party greater and stronger.”

According to the 55-year-old, “he looks forward to working closely together with him” as the party gears up to wrestle power from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
While applauding his competitors for the healthy competition, Mr Kwetey said he checks all the boxes the delegates wanted.
“I was not being complacent when saying what I was saying on the back of travelling to all 275 constituencies; spoken to them and listening to them. Therefore, I could feel exactly what they were yearning for so I knew what I was talking about when I said I was confident of winning.”

National Delegates of the biggest opposition party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), went to the polls on December 17 to elect national executives for the party at the Accra Sports Stadium.
It was an elective congress and delegates from the party’s various constituencies in the country, including former government appointees of the party, that were eligible to vote cast their ballot to elect fresh leaders to steer the affairs of the party going into the 2024 general election. Almost 9,000 delegates took part in the voting process.
