The main opposition party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will hold its Presidential primaries on Saturday May 6, 2023 to elect a flagbearer for the party to contest the 2024 presidential election.
This was revealed in a proposed timetable released by the party at its Functional and National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
According to the timetable, the opening of nominations would be from Monday February 22 to Wednesday February 24, 2023. Submission and filing of forms would further take place from Monday March 20, 2023 to Wednesday March 22, 2023.
Per the timetable, vetting of the aspirants would be held from Monday March 27, 2023 to Wednesday March 29, 2023. After the vetting, aspirants who have issues with the vetting process would be given the change to appeal from March 30, 2023 to April 6, 2023 after which the election would come off on May 6.
However, the NEC of the NDC has appealed to all those who have expressed interest to contest as flag bearer or a parliamentary aspirant to organise their campaign with decorum, devoid of name-calling, accusations and insults.
NEC further noted that the overall interest must override any other individual interest, emphasizing that the battle for the 2024 election is not about NDC internal politics; it is about defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and taking over the reins of government, irrespective of who is elected the flag bearer.
Filing fees For Aspirants
Party members interested in leading the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2024 presidential election will have to pay ¢500,000 as a filing fee and ¢30,000 as a nomination fee.
So far, the names of three personalities — former President, John Dramani Mahama; a former Minister of Finance, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, and a former Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu, have come up for the presidential contest.
The timetable urged all regions to immediately resolve all outstanding issues in the branches and constituency elections to pave way for next programmes of the party. Also, All appointees of the party at all levels are to remain at post until ending of May 2023. However, if executives at any level have special case regarding any appointee, they can call for the matter to be resolved.
The timetable disclosed that ward coordinators’ elections are to take place from 1st-7th February 2023. According to the timetable, It is only the ward coordinator who is to be elected but the ward secretary, organiser, and women and youth organisers are to be appointed by constituency executives on recommendations of the ward coordinators.
Ablakwa’s Prediction
Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on Sunday January 1, 2023 released a list of twenty (20) controversial things that he forecasts will come to pass in the year 2023.
The Member of Parliament for the North Tongu constituency in the Volta Region took to his Facebook page to make the predictions.
To avoid his forecasts being treated with contempt, he issued a caveat, saying “these are no charlatanic prophecies”.
According to him, Former President John Mahama will emerge victorious from the 2023 NDC Flagbearer Primaries with more than 95% of valid votes cast. He also noted that Mr Mahama is expected to retain Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his Running Mate for the 2024 Presidential election.
