BoG Governor Must Assert His Independence Or Immediately Resign- Minority

Former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu.

The immediate past Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has denied posting any information on social media regarding the change in leadership announced by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to him, the social media handles both on Twitter and Facebook do not belong to him. He revealed that it is simply an attempt by some unscrupulous persons to tarnish his image.

“For the record, I wish to state that the said Facebook and Twitter Accounts do not belong to me and that I have never owned a Facebook or Twitter Account neither have I caused any such Account to be opened and operated in my name.

Indeed, I have never been on social media. I have never had or caused to be opened and operated in my name, any form of social media Account. The said Accounts purported to be in my name are therefore FAKE and so are the posts.”

Reacting to a release dated January 23, 2023 that read: “Never let a wishbone grow where a backbone should be. I will, and forever serve my country”, the legislator for Tamale South urged the public to disregard any statements posted on the two platforms.

Additionally, he entreated particularly the rank and file of the National Democratic Congress Party, to ignore the posts with the contempt they deserve.

“The creation of the Accounts and the posts therein are mere attempts by detractors to sow seeds of discontent within the hierarchy of the Party and to smear my person, but they shall definitely fail. I have no doubt that the truth will always prevail.”

It will be recalled that National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, January 23, 2023, announced a reshuffle of its leadership in Parliament. The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu and the Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, both with close to twenty years of experience in Parliament were changed as leaders of the Caucus.

Aftermath of Leadership Reshuffle in NDC

A letter signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, announced Dr Cassiel Ato Forson as the new Minority Leader with Emmanuel Kofi-Armah Buah as the Deputy Minority Leader. Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Governs Agbodza was also named as the party’s new Minority Chief Whip, taking over from Asawase MP, Muntaka Mubarak.

The decision was met with much opposition by many supporters of the party including Tamale Central legislator, Murtala Mohammed, who questioned the timing and relevance of the decision.

Supporters of the party in Tamale were equally unhappy with the changes and called on the party to rescind its decision. Some NDC youth thronged the Tamale Party office at Lamashegu to register their displeasure over the replacement of Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the MP for Tamale South, as the Minority Leader in Parliament.

A group by name, Concerned Dagbon Youth, issued a statement signed by its President, Alhassan M. Alhassan, which revealed that the decision was ill conceived. It explained that the decision would harm the NDC.

The group insisted that Haruna Iddrisu represents hope as well as the proud tradition and culture of the people, and it will therefore resist any attempt to derail him.

Prior to this, Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress was allegedly attacked by some angry youth suspected to be members of the party who stormed a radio station where he was speaking to justify the reshuffle of the leadership of the party’s caucus in parliament.

According to the media house, Gbande was eventually saved from the irate men and whisked away, but he received verbal assaults and several slaps.

Meanwhile, a meeting between the Minority caucus and the party leadership has been scheduled for January 31 to settle the differences arising from the reshuffle.
