I'm not an Asakaa boy - Kofi Jamar

Ghanaian rapper, Kofi Jamar, has revealed that he has no alliance with the Kumasi-based Asakaa boys.

Talking about how he found himself with them from the beginning of their career, he noted that he is not an originator of the Asakaa group but put in work for the group to be where they are today.

He told in an interview;

“It goes way back to when I was in Kumasi. I put a lot of work in for that movement to be recognized like it is now but that is an untold story because I wasn’t known when it all started. Only a few of the people in Kumasi know the impact we put on the culture”.

Kofi Jamar

He disclosed that before now, he had songs that were known as street anthems and were hit songs only in Kumasi when he used to go perform at shows.

He emphasized, saying;

“I just added my voice to the movement because it was something I was happy about because I’m from Kumasi, and it was a big moment for us so I needed to add my voice to it. I’m not an Asakaa boy but I’ve influenced that culture in one way or the other”.

Kofi Jamar

He revealed that he would prefer not to be tagged as an Asakaa boy because he is way more than that and can do way more than an Asakaa boy.

Speaking on the kind of relationship he has currently with the Asakaa boys, he disclosed that he is cool with them and has no issues whatsoever with any of them.

Kofi Jamar is best known for his hit song ‘Ekorso’ which evolved from the viral Kumerica/ Asaskaa trend.

“I love to work with that. I won’t do music with any artiste because of their popularity. Mostly I just look out for the sound that will blend smoothly with mine and how the artiste goes about his songs that’s what matters to me”.

Kofi Jamar

Talking about some artistes he would love to work with here in Ghana and outside, he mentioned a few names, some he’s worked with and want to work further with.

He said;

“Fortunately, I already have worked with a few of them like Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, and Shatta Wale. I’m working on one with Kwabena Kwabena which is already in the pipeline and I’m looking forward to working with some more of the legends because I look up to them a lot”.

Kofi Jamar

Speaking of legends, he noted that he would love to work with Kojo Antwi and Daddy Lumba especially because he feels there is something unique about their sounds and believes it will be beautiful and new if he gets the chance to collaborate with both or either of them.

He added saying;

“Also, I’ll like to collaborate with Omar Sterling and Darko Vibes. Globally I’ll like to work with Burna Boy, Wizkid, Angelou Cudjoe, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, and many others”.

Kofi Jamar

According to the rapper, he’s not dedicated to only one genre of music because he is a musician and as such believes he can do as many genres of music as he wants to.

Kofi Jamar stated that he is still blending genres and mentioned that his fans should not be surprised if he is ever seen doing a gospel song, as he can switch it up at any time.

He disclosed saying;

“I started by doing hip-pop, I’ve been doing highlife, I’ve been doing afrobeat and I’ve also been doing pure rap music, but I still categorize myself as a musician because all the genres I do are under the umbrella of being a musician so I don’t think I belong to a specific genre.

“An example is my current song ‘Tomorrow’. That song is a switch from what I’m known for doing and you will notice this only if you listen to most of my songs and do the comparison. You will realize that they are not the same and they always have a different switch to it”.
