Mobile Money Interoperability Goes Live As MTN MobileMoney LTD and Vodafone Ghana Mobile Financial Services Enter into Partnership

Vodafone Ghana Mobile Financial Services Limited (Vodafone Cash) has entered into partnership with and MobileMoney Limited (MML) to enable interoperability services that allow Vodafone Cash and MTN Mobile Money customers pay at each other’s merchant point of sale.  

The long awaited service is a major milestone in creating an enabling environment in furtherance of the financial inclusion agenda of both entities and the Government of Ghana.

Shaibu Haruna, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of MML, commenting on the development, hailed the move by the two biggest mobile money operators to come together to take a step closer to realizing the ambition of developing the largest financial platform on the continent.

Historic Moment

Vodafone Cash’s Acting Mobile Financial Services Manager, Judith Adumua-Bossman, on her part, said, “At Vodafone Cash, we believe that partnerships are key to expanding access to financial services for everyone”.

“We are dedicated to creating innovative solutions that will help our customers better manage their financial goals. This is a truly historic moment for us, and this new feature underscores our commitment towards growing accessibility, convenience and value for our customers.”

The service which went live on March 1, 2023, is available to all Vodafone Cash and MTN Mobile Money customers.  Customers of both networks can now make direct payments for goods and services at any MTN Mobile Money or Vodafone Cash enabled merchant point across the country.

MobileMoney Ltd is a subsidiary of MTN Ghana responsible for Mobile Financial Services. Launched in 2009, MTN MoMo has 17 million registered subscribers.  MTN MoMo works with 20 partner banks, All the PSPs and more than 240,000 Agents across the country. Between 2016 and 2022 a sum of GHS 688 million cedis was paid as Interest to over 15.7 million customers.              

Vodafone Cash is a subsidiary of Vodafone Ghana which is a leading provider of telecommunications services to consumers, corporates, and multinationals in Ghana. Vodafone is the only total communications solutions provider – mobile, fixed lines, internet, voice, and data – and is currently the telecom company of choice for Ghanaians. It is the second-ranked operator in terms of market share in the sector.
