Ghana Has No Import Substitution Policy To Ensure Cap On Imported Goods- CPP

General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah.

The General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah, has lamented the country’s no importation substitution policy on imported goods.

According to her, an attempt at industrialisation is left in the hands of foreigners whose only interest is to make profit, and repatriate most of their resources out of the country. She indicated that this move is contributing to the weakening of the country’s local currency.

“The Country has no Import Substitution Policy to ensure that there is a cap on goods that have to be imported into the country; unfortunately, most of our consumables are imported…”

Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah

Contained in a statement dated June 12, 2024, signed by Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah, to mark the 74th anniversary of the existence of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), she highlighted the mismanagement of the country’s economy, over-dependence on foreign financial aid and assistance which makes mockery of the much touted mantra of Ghana Beyond Aid.

Furthermore, she noted that the dreams of its founder, Kwame Nkrumah, have been dashed given the country’s current economic situation and also because of policies that do not benefit Ghanaians.

“The CPP fought and gained independence for this country with a view to creating jobs through the massive industrialization drive, the quest to liberalize this nation from the claws of colonialism and imperialism and also make sure that as Africans and Ghanaians, we will forever be capable of managing our own affairs as espoused by our Founder Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who is also the founder of our Country.”

Providing an alternative to the current government, she emphasized the need for a CPP governed Ghana with “a well-thought-out economic development plan which was aimed at ensuring that Ghana attained economic independence”. With this, she explained that “successive governments have had no plans aimed at ensuring that Ghana has a sound economy”.

As a consequent, the CPP’s general secretary called on all comrades to support the cause towards bringing victory and liberation to Ghana.

“As we, as a party go forward to create the internal mechanisms and structures to enable us to win power in 2024 to liberate this nation, we call on all comrades to support the cause toward bringing victory and liberation to Ghana. Ghana needs the CPP to come on board at this crucial moment of our existence.”

In the party’s bid to win the 2024 elections, it will hold its flag bearer election in June. This is in accordance with the Constitution of the CPP which states that when the party is in opposition it would elect its flag bearer two years before the general election.

According to Nana Yaa Jantuah, the decision to go by the constitutional provision was overwhelmingly agreed by all members present at the Central Committee which is the highest administrative decision-making body of the party. In that regard, she revealed that the Congress Committee which will fashion and put together modalities as well as oversee the flag bearer election has been formed by the Central Committee.

Furthermore, she noted that members of the committee include Wing Commander Patrick Sorborjor (retd), Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah, Yirimambo Moses Ambing , Emmanuel Opare Addo , Nana Mireku Tumi,  Godwin Opare Addo and Felicia Akorli.

Also, she indicated that the party at the meeting affirmed its commitment for the reorganization and elections to be held at all levels of the party structures in due course.
