Bawumia Receives Nomination Forms

Dr. Mahumudu Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President, has said that he will submit his nomination papers today, June 16, in order to run for Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a tweet, he said “Dear Friends,…Friday 16 June, I shall file my nomination forms and contest the NPP Presidential Primary. It is possible.”

Dr. Bawumia has conducted in-depth consultation over the past few months regarding his desire to run for the Party’s flagbearership.

When Vice President Bawumia announced his plans to lead the NPP following the term of President Akufo-Addo in 2024, he met with members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament, the Party’s Council of Elders, and several traditional and religious leaders.

On Tuesday, May 30, at the Party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Mr. Fred Oware, a Senior Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, led a delegation to choose the nomination form on his behalf alongside Sammy Awuku to run in the Party’s Presidential Primaries.

The Party’s leadership began accepting nominations for its presidential primaries on May 26, 2023, and it will end on June 24, 2023.

“Consequently, an Aspiring Presidential Candidate shall obtain the Nomination Forms after payment of a non-refundable nomination fee of Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢50, 000.00) only, through a Banker’s Draft,” the statement said.

Ten candidates for the presidency have thus far taken nomination papers to run for the Party’s flagbearer position.

Most NPP Delegates Prefer Bawumia To Lead The Party

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is currently leading the former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, and MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong in the battle to lead the NPP in 2024, according to a recent survey by Global InfoAnalytics among party members.

A total of 3,570 delegates were chosen at random from constituencies in each of the sixteen regions.

According to the poll, Dr. Bawumia is in the lead with 34.8% of the vote, followed by Kyerematen with 27.9% and Kennedy Agyapong with 12.5%.

Less than 1% of the votes were cast for the other contenders, while 8.9% did not declare their vote, and 15.10% were unsure.

In a run-off, Alan Kyerematen is ahead of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, according to the poll, 38% to 37% of the vote. In the event of a run-off, 16% of the delegates were unsure, and 9% did not want to say who they would support.

The poll reveals that 72% of delegates who voted for Kennedy Agyapong in the first round chose to vote for Mr. Kyerematen, compared to 12% who chose to vote for Dr. Bawumia, creating a potentially problematic scenario for the Vice President.

Additionally, compared to 25% of other delegates who supported Dr. Bawumia in the first round, 55% of those who supported other presidential candidates in that round intend to support Mr. Kyerematen.

70% of the delegates believe the country is headed in the right way, 24% say it is headed in the wrong direction, and 6% are unsure of the direction the country should be going.

Regarding the President’s job performance, the poll reveals that 77% of delegates approve of his performance, compared to 17% who disagree, and 6% who did not have an opinion.
