Governor of the Central Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, speaking at the highly regarded 30th anniversary celebration of the African Export and Import Bank (Afreximbank), held under the theme “Unlocking Africa’s Trade, Investment, and Commerce Opportunities Leveraging Digital Platforms and Ecosystems,” has highlighted the urgent need for policymakers to explore innovative approaches and pathways to fully unlock and deploy the enormous potential of Africa’s trade, investment, and commerce opportunities.
According to Dr. Addison, the key to this transition is for Africa to fully utilize the enormous potential of digital platforms and ecosystems.
The Governor emphasized the significance of Africa adopting this opportunity to fuel economic growth and create regional integration while acknowledging the transformative force of technology, which has altered industries worldwide.
To attain this, he outlined three critical channels through which the continent can capitalize on digital advancements.
Improving internet infrastructure was regarded to be of utmost importance. Dr. Addison called for cooperative efforts between governments and private sector stakeholders to invest in broadband infrastructure, expand network coverage, and bridge the digital divide both within and between countries.
The Governor recognized that access to reliable and affordable internet connectivity serves as the bedrock for the flourishing of digital platforms. Businesses, entrepreneurs, and consumers may fully participate in the digital economy and take advantage of new trade and investment opportunities by providing continuous communication.
Secondly, the Governor also emphasized the significance of fostering digital entrepreneurship and innovation. Africa has a plethora of entrepreneurial talent that needs to be fostered and supported, especially among its technologically astute youth population.
Dr. Addison emphasized the need for establishing incubation centers, implementing mentorship programs, and facilitating access to funding to empower startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing innovative solutions, that address the unique challenges and needs of the continent.
By encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation, he pointed out that Africa can drive job creation, stimulate economic diversification, and attract investment across key sectors.
Lastly, encouraging the development of digital skills has become a crucial step in Africa’s digital revolution. Dr. Addison emphasized that in order for people and organizations to effectively utilize the potential of digital platforms, they must possess digital literacy and proficiency.
The Governor in his speech urged educational institutions, in collaboration with private sector entities to design and implement programs that equip the continent’s youth and workforce with the necessary digital skills and knowledge.
By investing in training and upskilling initiatives, he disclosed that Africa can foster a highly empowered workforce capable of driving innovation, productivity, and competitiveness in the digital era.

BoG Commits To Ensure Utilization Of Digital Platforms, Ecosystem For Vital Economic Growth
Dr. Addison elaborated on the Bank of Ghana’s commitment, saying that the organization is devoted to assisting digitalization initiatives and offering a supportive regulatory environment for fintechs and financial institutions to open up trade, investment, and business opportunities in Africa through digital platforms and ecosystems.
Notably, the Governor highlighted the Bank of Ghana’s involvement in initiatives such as the MANSA Platform and integration with the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), which aim to streamline processes, enhance transparency, and facilitate seamless transactions.
Dr. Addison extended an invitation to financial institutions and private businesses to actively engage in these initiatives, emphasizing the transformative power of digitalization to shape a prosperous future for Africa.
