Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has urged the government to increase its investment in Ghana football
On Wednesday, June 21, 2023, he said this as he was presented with the Ghana Premier League Medeama SCs trophy. The Tarkwa-based team paid a courtesy visit to the Speaker of Parliament of Ghana today and gave him the trophy they won at his chambers, inside the Parliament building in Accra.
A group led by the club’s president, Mr. Moses Armah Parker, the board’s chairman, Dr. Tony Aubyn, a board member, Mr. James Essilfie, the member of parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuayem, Hon. Mireku Duker, as well as members of the technical team and the playing body, expressed their excitement at meeting the Speaker of Parliament for the first time and their desire for him to support the club.
The Ghana Premier League champions were received by Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, being the first Speaker of Parliament in Ghana’s history to be honored with receiving the Ghana Premier League Championship trophy.
He acknowledged to be the club’s patron and issued them orders to defend their title as Ghana’s champions and aim to spread across all of Africa. He however expressed his gratitude towards such a feat and also pleaded with the government to provide funding for football because it has turned into a business for making money.
“Government needs to invest more in football infrastructure, create more football opportunities because football has become a big business. I have said this severally in Parliament and I expect it to be done. Countries are developing their football because of the financial returns they get. Football can boost our economy more than Gold and Cocoa.”

Bagbin Offers GH₵100,000 To League Champions
Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin pledged GH₵100,000 to Medeama Sporting Club (SC), the Ghana Premier League champions.
On Sunday, June 11, 2023, at Akoon Park, Medeama SC defeated Tamale City with a decisive 3-0 victory to win the first Ghana Premier League title in history. Medeama SC displayed outstanding performance throughout the league season, winning 18, drawing six, and losing 10.
The Speaker of Parliament generously offered the donation during a ceremony on Wednesday in Accra, where the team and its management handed the trophy to Parliament.
“So Medeama SC, I want to assure you that the house is with you and I will proceed to pledge, which you can take up from me anytime. An amount of GH₵100, 000 now to support you… This is the time to enjoy, refresh, motivate and incentivize yourself ahead for the task ahead, we are with you…Congratulations!”

The speaker made it clear that Parliament would provide Medeama SC unflinching support to help the team win the African Cup on behalf of the country.
“I want to on your behalf commit the house to go with them all the way to the continent to ensure that they win the African Cup for Ghana. This, I will proceed to enforce to ensure that they get the necessary resources and motivation to surprise the continent by winning the cup.”
