In Central African Republic, the Wagner forces assist President Faustin-Archange Touadéra’s administration to train the C.A.R army, and also aid in maintaining some degree of security stability in and around the country’s capital of Bangui.

In Mali, where the Military administration has been faced with Islamist insurgency, Wagner fighters have also been present in the country. After the overthrow of Ibrahim Boubacar Keita’s government, the Malian military administration has been in diplomatic uproar with France, leading to Paris withdrawing its troops from the West African country. The Military administration however, turned to the Wagner forces, to help them in fighting armed insurgencies in the country.

The recent impasse between Wagner leader Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin, and Russia’s top brass defense gurus, Putin has declared his ex-chef as a criminal, who is planning an armed mutiny. However, Prigozhin had accused the Russian Defense Minister of conspiring to eliminate his troops on the frontline. He claimed that, the Wagner troops have been bombarded with missiles and rockets by the Russian military leaders.

After taken over the Russian military base in Rostov-on-Don, the Wagner leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin sent a message to the Kremlin that, he and his men would be heading towards Moscow to dethrone the Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and other military top brasses, if Putin does not take action himself.

According to the Regional Governor of Rostov-on-Don, Igor Artamonov, Wagner forces have been present in the Lipetsk province, which is 360 kilometers south of Moscow, where authorities “are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the population.”

With the recent internal conflict among the hierarchy of Kremlin’s elite, Bamako and Bangui will be closing monitoring situation in Moscow. Wagner forces have the backbone of their security, providing security training to their respective armies. On the other, the internal conflict between Wagner leadership and the Kremlin, may mean, Wagner could possibly withdraw its forces from these countries, if the need be.

Soon after President Touadera’s election victory in 2016, the resource-rich Central Africa Republic was threatened by rebels. France also announced the withdrawal of its soldiers, who have been the backbone of a United Nations forces, tasked with ending the country’s civil conflict.

Additionally, due to a U.N. arms embargo imposed on the Central African Republic following a previous rebel takeover, Touadéra’s army and militia lacked the necessary armaments to defeat fighters posing a danger to Bangui, the nation’s capital.

Furthermore, Russia got authority from the United Nations Security Council to send military trainers to aid the central African country’s administration. Moscow rather sought the services of the notorious Wagner Group.
