James Gyakye Quayson, the recently sworn-in member of parliament for Assin North Constituency, has received congratulations from the majority caucus leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, administered Mr. Gyakye Quayson’s oath of office on Tuesday, July 4, exactly one week after his resounding victory in the by-election.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu in his remarks to welcome Mr. James Gyakye Quayson back to Parliament, emphasized that the swearing-in is legal and has been approved by everyone.

Therefore, he added, it should not be perceived as persecution as claimed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), if the the same constitution takes its course through a judicial action against Mr. Gyakye Quayson.

He gave an example of how the application of Article 97 of the Constitution led to the “appearance and disappearance” of some former legislators.

“So, Mr Speaker, when you have some people talking about selective justice, we wonder where they are coming from,” he said. The majority leader also stated that the re-election of Mr Gyakye Quayson is a solemn choice made by the people of Assin North “and we must respect it. The rest of it is in the hands of the Attorney-General.”

Gyakye Quayson, MP for Assin North Constituecny Sworn In

James Gyakye Quayson has been formally sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency after winning the by-election on June 27.

Following the Supreme Court decision on May 17 that deemed Mr. Quayson’s prior election invalid and forbade him from retaining the seat, he was successful in his election. He was able to win back his seat in the by-election, and he now serves as Assin North’s representative.

Prior to Mr. Quayson’s oath of office, John Dramani Mahama, the former President, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership stormed Parliament in a show of support, underscoring the significance of the event.

The swearing-in event and the mandate it signifies for James Gyakye Quayson as the elected Member of Parliament for Assin North were made more significant by the NDC flagbearer and party leadership’s attendance.

James Gyakye Quayson took the oaths of allegiance and membership in parliament, which were delivered by Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of the house. James Gyakye Quayson is officially sworn in as the elected representative for Assin North and is now prepared to represent the constituency and participate in Parliament’s legislative proceedings.

Prior to the eagerly awaited swearing-in, the Majority Members of Parliament were still settling into their respective positions in the chamber.

On Tuesday, July 4, when the Member of Parliament-elect for the Assin North Constituency in the Central Region was sworn in, the Minority in Parliament was dressed entirely in white. The Minority Members of Parliament visibly wearing white apparel as ceremony preparations got under way, signified the importance of the occasion.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2020 that Mr. Gyakye Quayson’s election was unlawful, and he has since come back to assume his place in Parliament.

In a by-election for the Assin North constituency, Gyakye Quayson won re-election with 57.56 percent of the total votes cast. Charles Opoku of the NPP, who won 42.15 percent of the vote, and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), who received just 0.29 percent of the vote.
