Salam Mustapha, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Youth Organizer, has urged supporters of prospective Presidential candidates to maintain composure among themselves and avoid anything that is damaging to the Party’s dignity.

He declared that in order to win the general election in 2024, the party must remain unified following the internal elections. He underlined that if the party fails to focus on this aspect of the campaign for decorum, it would not be helpful to the party and there may be conflicts within the party right after the elections.

“We need unity, so we all should accord each other respect while campaigning. We want to see leaders of the campaign teams of Alan and Bawumia coexisting peacefully so the supporters can understand that they’re not at loggerheads. It’s not about trading insults, tension, or bitterness which does not help us as a party. At the end of the day, anyone who emerges victorious has won for the party as a whole.”

The ruling party has vetted ten flagbearer candidates to compete in a Super Delegates Congress on August 26. The top five candidates will advance to the Presidential primary in November.

However, the campaign staff members of the front-runners in the race, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, have recently been at each other’s necks.

Bawumia Not Imposed On Delegates

Frederick Opare Ansah, a member of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign staff, disputed charges that the latter was being forced upon delegates in advance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential primary.

The former Suhum MP also dismissed as untrue the idea that Dr. Bawumia’s campaign is being forced upon those in positions of authority.

Mr. Ansah made the remark in response to earlier statements made by Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a former Adentan MP and spokesperson for Alan Kyerematen’s campaign.

According to a spokesperson for Alan Kyerematen’s campaign, delegates are being forced to vote for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He asserted that some officials of the government allegedly phone delegates associated with Mr. Kyerematen secretly to threaten them.

He lamented the Vice President’s predilection for incumbent status over the other candidates even before the party releases election rules.

The charges, according to Mr. Ansah, who formerly backed Alan, are untrue and should be ignored. He claimed that the all-encompassing support Dr. Bawumia has received is a result of how alluring the camp is.

“I have always been a member of the Alan team, but now it is Dr Bawumia. It is the most attractive group in the party ahead of the presidential primary. The overwhelming support of NPP delegates made me choose him and a lot of delegates are also rooting for Bawumia.”

Frederick Opare Ansah

The former Suhum MP also expressed confidence that Dr. Bawumia will be chosen as the NPP’s flag bearer and then Ghana’s next President in 2024, allowing him to finish the good things he has begun.

“We all know that vice presidents have no authority or stake in government. But Bawumia has utilized the small space given to him very well. All the digitization agenda has a purpose and he is driving us there.”
