IGP’s Leaked Tape A Distraction- CPP General Secretary

Nana Yaa Jantuah

Nana Yaa Jantuah, the Convention People’s Party’s General Secretary (CPP),  has opined that the audio that was released about a plot to fire IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is only a diversion.

She claimed that the tape has become a household name and has diverted attention from Ghana’s major concern, which she claimed was the act of governance.

According to the CPP General Secretary, this tape raises concerns about nation’s security and should not be in the hands of elected officials. She argued that a parliamentary investigation will not resolve the problem and is therefore not the best course of action. She added that the tape’s narrative was a futile lamentation.

“IGP’s leaked tape is a distraction. Like-minded people went to have a conversation, so if there was a traitor, wouldn’t they have known? This tape has now taken away the bread-and-butter issues.

“Who recorded the audio and who leaked it? They should take it to BNI, they have forensic experts who can analyze and find out the people. If parliament should investigate, what will they do? Who will be in charge of the forensic side?”

Nana Yaa Jantuah

However, Percival Kofi Akpaloo, the founder and head of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), disputed the veracity of the allegedly leaked audio in which speakers are heard discussing the ouster of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the IGP.

He called the purported audio “unrealistic,” “childish,” and “needless,” saying that it should not be taken into account by the general public.

Mr. Akpaloo disagreed with requests for the government to form an impartial commission to look into the tape. He is certain that the audio is false and that it will not jeopardize national security or the next general elections.

“I have heard about the leaked tape but it is not something that we should waste our time to discuss because it could be a mere conversation between some people. IGP Dampare was appointed by President Akufo-Addo and it is only him who could cause his removal. But the Akufo Addo I know, will not do such a thing.”

In addition, Kofi Akpaloo praised Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s accomplishments, calling him the best IGP who would not submit to pressure or attempt to rig elections in any way.

Thorough Investigation Needed

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive inquiry into the recording that was leaked.

Asiedu Nketia stressed the significance of security’s impact on election outcomes and the necessity of paying great attention to the issue.

He claimed that anyone who asserts that security cannot affect election outcomes, does not understand elections. He however declared that since a free and fair election is a necessary component of a quality election, such a person should enroll in school and pursue education.

The NDC chairman highlighted the need for proper security measures in order to ensure voter freedom, which is a critical component of fair elections. He questioned the NPP’s response to the leaked tape, claiming that the party’s defensive posture suggests it is aware of its veracity.

“If you claim the tape is fabricated and, therefore, should be disregarded, and we are saying let us investigate and punish the perpetrator who brought up such orchestration to tarnish someone’s name, then you turn around and say that you won’t allow for the investigations, what are you afraid of about the investigations?

“Because there is some truth behind the audio, that is why you are afraid. If you have no idea, then they should have added their voice and called for investigations to redeem themselves.”

Johnson Asiedu Nketia

The NPP, however, has cast doubt on the veracity of the audio recording that was supposedly leaked and purports to disclose preparations to fire the Inspector-General of Police before the 2024 elections.
