Parliamentary Probe Unnecessary On IGP’s Leaked Tape- Prof Gyampo

What Do You Want Their CV’s For?- Prof Gyampo To Akufo-Addo

Professor Ransford Gyampo

Ransford Gyampo, a professor at the University of Ghana, has declared that the parliamentary probe into the audio that was released and shows a plot to remove the Inspector General of Police is superfluous.

He explained that any attempt to remove the IGP had been thwarted by the tape that had leaked and the public commentary on it.

As stated by the Interior Minister, there was never a plot to fire the IGP. Thus, according to Prof. Gyampo, “The parliamentary probe is entirely unnecessary.”

Prof. Ransford Gyampo further stated that even though the Interior Minister had commented on the leaked audio recording that purports to show a scheme to unseat the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and has promised that there is no such plot, the Presidency must also make a remark on the subject.

He clarified that the Presidency must speak on this matter because it was not the Minister who selected the IGP. “I expect the Presidency to issue a statement on this matter,” he said.

“A formalized statement should be issued to assure the IGP that he will continue to remain in office so long as he discharges and takes his duties without fear or favor.”

Committee Probe Will Yield No Results

The work of the committee established by the Speaker of Parliament, according to Tolon MP Habibu Iddrisu, will not produce any positive outcome.

He claimed that instead of Parliament, the security agencies should have taken care of this issue.

“It is very disappointing, you have a lot of questions to ask, and I appreciate that this thing happening in our country is totally unacceptable. Why did they record it? Who recorded it, and who leaked it? These are the critical questions to ask. The recording is wrong, the one who leaked it is wrong.

“It will be an exercise that will not yield any results. The speaker did not indicate clearly the reference. If that committee is set up and parliament finishes its work, then what? There are agencies that are equipped to handle this tape, not Parliament. From where I sit, I don’t see where it is going, it is just the politics we are seeing. This committee the speaker has formed, I don’t see where it will go. I don’t think Parliament was the right forum for this to be done. There is more to it than we have heard.”

Habibu Iddrisu

The appointment of a seven-member committee to look into the audio recording of some people allegedly plotting the ouster of IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare was mandated by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

Three representatives from each of the two caucuses minority and majority parties), plus one expert, will serve on the committee. Within a week, the identities of the three representatives from the Majority and Minority caucuses are anticipated to be made public. The Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, issued an urgent statement on the floor requesting a probe into the tape just 24 hours prior to this.
