Why I Created Afro-fusion Genre – Burna Boy

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Burna Boy

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, born Damini Ogulu, but popularly known as Burna Boy, has claimed that he pioneered a new genre of music called afro-fusion because he did not want to be boxed into the popular West African genre, afro beats.

The self-styled “African Giant” said he does not believe in genres.

Burna Boy said:

“Afro-fusion is a big melting pot of cultures and sounds. Afro-fusion is not a box.

“Let me break it down, why I created afro-fusion is because I didn’t want to be boxed into any afro beats or hip-hop or anything. Because I don’t believe in genres. I had to create my own.”

Burna Boy

It can be recalled that Burna Boy recently asserted that Afro beats are “literally nothing” and lacks lyrical substance.

He said:

“90 percent of them [Nigerian musicians] have no real life experiences which is why most of Nigerian music or African music or afro beats as people call it, is mostly about nothing, literally nothing.

“There is no substance to it — like, nobody is talking about anything in it. it is just a great time. It’s an amazing time. But at the end of the day, life is not an amazing time. No matter how nice of a time you are having now or you had at some point or you plan to have, you are still going to face life”.

He further added:

“So, for me, I feel like music should be the essence of the artist. An artist is a person who has good days, bad days, great days, and worst days. So, I’m dropping a project that should be a window for the fans to see those experiences”.

The Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Burna Boy denied insinuating black Americans do not have culture.

According to Burna Boy, he said he was misquoted. He said his mission is to build bridges and unite the world.

Burna Boy said:

“My mission is to bring us [the world] together. My mission is to build a bridge that can’t be broken, a bridge that should have always been there. People that said that, I alluded that Black Americans don’t have culture, have their own agenda.

“Coming back to the point of that I said black people have no culture or whatever. Does that even make sense? If you watched the video of the interview, can you show me the part where I said black Americans don’t have culture? That is all I need. If somebody can just show me that part. There is nothing I said that Malcolm X didn’t say. But obviously, it’s Burna Boy saying it and he is from Africa and it fits the agenda for your little group or whatever”.

Also, Burna Boy, clarified his net worth.

He said contrary to the information on the internet that he is worth $22 million (₦16.8 billion) only, his net worth is way more than that.

He disclosed that he would not talk about it and prefers they go that way, adding that he is okay even though it is inaccurate.

The Nigerian artist said it is a blessing for him to be able to take care of his family’s financial needs.

He said:

“It’s great, man. It’s a blessing. It’s nothing short of a blessing.

“I always told my mum while growing up as a kid that I would buy her a house and a car someday. Another ‘I Told Them’ moment”.
