Hon Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, Member of Parliament (MP) for Anyaa-Sowutuom Constituency, has revealed that in tomorrow’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) Super Delegates Conference, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is expected to receive the majority of votes.
He claimed that given the way the system had been set up, it was obvious that Dr. Bawumia would receive the majority of the delegates’ votes.
In terms of who is eligible to vote for Bawumia, the MP said that nothing would be out of the ordinary to see or hear due to the setup; he added that this was because the majority of delegates had been pre-selected based on their allegiance or alignment with the Vice President’s visions.
“So that is my take on tomorrow’s event. At any rate, I’m troubled by the fact that there is a lot of anxiety for some people with regards to tomorrow’s voting, anxiety for people who are voting and anxiety for those who will be voted out. But through it all, I’m hoping that the culture of democracy within the party lives on. And that is the most important thing so that we work hard to make sure that the spirit of democracy in the NPP is maintained.”

He also disclosed that he is one of the 961 delegates who would cast their votes to select 5 candidates from the available 10. However, he asserted that he is impartial when evaluating matters pertaining to his own party, and he predicated this on the fact that editorial work and media coverage of the election were subpar.
According to him, the entire voting process was designed to appear to be a winner-takes-all competition.
Instead of portraying who wins and who loses, the Anyaa-Sowutuom MP argued that it should appear as though 5 of the 10 candidates were chosen. “And that is my thinking that it should be looked at more carefully. I mean that is what it is. It’s not about any one individual,” he added.
Everybody Should Be Given A Chance
When asked about the claim made by certain party members that the NPP should allow the Super Delegates Conference’s winner to serve as the flagbearer, rather than hold another election on the best 5 candidates on November 4, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi said; “I have a very different opinion in the sense that the British just played it out where the establishment candidate lost to the grassroot candidate; this is the current Pime Minister. And before that, there’s been many instances where the house rules in a certain direction and then in the general election.”
Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi said that if the party and the country did not wish to practice democracy, then there should not have even been a need for the date of November 4. He asserted that even 1000 out of 208,000 people cannot have opinions that are more important than the majority.
According to him, the appropriate procedures must be followed once democracy is engaged, and everyone must be given the chance to vote for whoever their hearts desire.
The MP also asserted that there is a purpose for democracy and for governing the party’s constitution, since anyone can hijack the Super Delegate Conference, and when one hijacks the Super Delegate Conference, it may not always reflect the wishes of the people.
“I’ve come to appreciate dissenting minds and I said it before that there’s been many dissenting minds about decisions that now have rather gone in favor of those who dissented at a certain point in time. And from a legal stand point, when it’s even 6 to 1, always pay attention to that 1 and listen to what that 1 says. Because sometimes, there’s a wealth of wisdom in what that 1 dissenting mind is trying to put forth.
“I can cite the likes of the affirmative action, and the likes of Rolls vs Wade. When these were brought into the world, there were dissenting minds at the time. Fast track several years down, now the same Americans have turned what Rolls vs Wade was. So clearly, there is room in governance for all legal world for the dissenting minds and I’ve really come to appreciate that.”
