I Almost Committed Suicide – Iyanya

Nigerian musician, Iyanya

Nigerian singer, Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, popularly known as Iyanya, has recounted how he almost committed suicide after he became bankrupt in 2020.

He said he lost his house and was staying in a hotel but couldn’t afford the hotel bills anymore at some point.

Iyanya narrated that he was taken to court by his former management, Temple Management Company, for allegedly stealing a car belonging to the company.

He explained:

“I was in court for a long time, I didn’t do shows. I couldn’t do anything. You know, when you stopped doing show, you now have to fall back on your savings. But when you are popping, that inflow of money is different, the way you spend is different from the way you spend whatever you saved. So, I felt it.

“I got to a point where I was like, man, I need to start touring. That was a crazy period for me. Guess what, two days after my last court case, COVID-19 started. I was stalled. I was in a hotel. My house was gone. I was in the hotel for a very long time. It got to one point, I couldn’t pay for the hotel bills anymore”.

He further stated:

“The owner of the hotel is such a great human being. I have never seen such an amazing human being like that. He allowed me to stay there. His name is Alaba. He allowed me to stay there for over a year. COVID literally caught up with me there. So, imagine not doing shows. Not touring for over a year, no inflow, and you are in court for the whole year. And then finally, it’s looking like the court case is finishing, the lockdown.

“I was in that hotel throughout the lockdown. I almost committed suicide. The manager stopped me one time. All of that stuff. Madness, man”.

Popular Nigerian singer, Iyanya, opened up on the effect his ex-Ghanaian girlfriend, actress Yvonne Nelson’s allegation had on his present relationship.

It can be recalled that Yvonne Nelson had accused Iyanya of cheating with actress Tonto Dikeh in her memoir, “I Am Not Yvonne Nelson”, which was published on June 18, 2023, while still in a relationship with her

In an honest revelation, Iyanya disclosed how the allegations nearly resulted in the end of his current relationship.

Iyanya claimed that following the publication of the book, a potential date almost lost interest in dating him.

He said:

“That stuff (Yvonne Nelson’s allegations) is crazy, bro. That stuff almost made me lose a relationship. A current relationship.

“Before this book (Yvonne Nelson’s memoir) I was talking to one innocent girl who is not famous but immediately that book came out, everything became shaky. The girl was feeling like, ‘Omo, this guy, have you changed? Are you sure you won’t do me the same?”.

Iyanya

Iyanya expressed how hurt he was by Yvonne Nelson’s book, which contained revelations about their past relationships, and how she tricked him into promoting the book without his knowledge.

The ‘Kukere’ hitmaker revealed that he was taken by surprise when he read about himself in the book, as had recently spoken with Yvonne before its launch.

She shared details about the duration and intensity of these affairs, sparking reactions from netizens, including Iyanya.

Weeks after the book’s release and the subsequent buzz it created, Iyanya still feels hurt that he was featured in the book without being informed.

The singer expressed his disappointment, emphasizing that he had a good relationship with Yvonne. He further revealed that she even asked him for a video endorsement for the book without disclosing that he would be prominently featured.
