Alan Condemned Attack on his Polling Agent

In a statement released on Sunday, August 27, 2023, Mr. Kyerematen, who finished third in the vote, express strong disapproval on the alleged assault that took place on the election day against his North-East Regional Coordinator.

He believed the action was unnecessary and unjustified because his representative had not broken any laws while at the voting location.

The act, he continued, was a stain on the party’s democratic internal system.

“I would however like to express my deep sorrow about the brutal assault on my polling agent in the North East Region. This is an indelible blot on the integrity of the internal democratic process within the NPP. I wish my colleague a speedy recovery and God’s manifold blessings and would like to assure him and his family of my unwavering support for his well-being,” an excerpt of his release said.

The New Patriotic Party held its Super Delegates Conference on Saturday, 26 August 2023 to elect five out of the 10 aspirants who were approved by the National Council of the party for the Special Electoral College election to contest in the November 4, 2023, national congress of the party to select a presidential candidate for the 2024 general election.

This was in line with the constitution of the Party Article 12(5b) which requires that “in instances where there are more than five contestants for nomination as the Party’s Presidential Candidate, a Special Electoral College shall cast their votes by secret ballot for the first five contestants to be short-listed”. The election was held in 17 polling centres across the sixteen regions in the country.

At the end of the voting, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia received 629 votes, or 68.15% of the vote, ahead of Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, who received 132 votes, or 14.30% of the vote, former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen received 95 votes or 10.29% of the vote, former Agriculture Minister, Dr Afriyie Akoto received 36 votes, who came in fourth, and Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko both received nine (9) votes.  Given the above, a re-run was supposed to be held between Mr. Francis Addai-Nimo and Mr. Boakye Agyako but Mr. Agyarko pulled out citing breaches of the modalities and the guidelines for the Special Electoral College.

For many political analysts and social media commentators, the contest was between an established candidate and non-established candidates and were therefore not surprised by the significant vote margin the vice president had after the polls.

Reacting to the victory the vice president said he is humbled and very grateful for the election but it is only the first step of winning the flagbearership of the party, and therefore called for unity among the leadership and ranks of the party towards victory in 2024.
