U.S Marks 22nd Anniversary Of 9/11

Names of victims are read during the 22nd anniversary commemoration of the 9/11 attacks on Tuesday, Sepember 11, 2023.

A lot of people gathered at memorials, firehouses, city halls, campuses and other places in U.S to observe the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11terrorist attacks.

Vice President Kamala Harris joined other dignitaries at the ceremony at Ground Zero in New York.

The event does not entail speeches from political figures, instead the podium is given to victims’ relatives for an hourslong reading of the names of the dead.

U.S Vice President, Kamala Harris places her hand over her heart during the National Anthem at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City on Monday, September 11, 2023. She stood alongside Mayor Eric Adams (left) and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (right).

Former New York City Mayors; Rudy Giuliani and Mike Bloomberg were also present at the service. Giuliani was Mayor during the time of the attacks. His term ended just months after the attack and he was succeeded by Bloomberg.

Bill de Blasio, another former Mayor, was also at the service held at Ground Zero.

It is the first time that a sitting President has not attended one of the commemorative services at Ground Zero, the Pentagon or in Shanksville, Pennsylvania or at least hosted a memorial service at the White House, which Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama each did during one year of their terms in office.

Obama followed one of those observances by recognizing the military with a visit to Fort Meade in Maryland.

Biden, who is on his way to Washington from a trip to Vietnam will mark the anniversary in Alaska. He becomes the first President to commemorate 9/11 in Alaska, or anywhere in the western U.S.

He will spend just two hours at Joint Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska with service members and first responders.

Biden visited all three 9/11 memorial sites in 2021 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the attacks.

Last year, he gave remarks from the Pentagon to pay respects to the nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks.

As another way of marking the anniversary, many Americans do volunteer work on what Congress has designated both Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

U.S First Lady And Second Gentleman To Take Part In Anniversary Events

U.S First Lady will take part in activities to mark the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attack.

She is due to lay a wreath at the 9/11 memorial at the Pentagon.

Also, Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, is expected at a ceremony at the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, four passenger jets were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists after takeoff.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed when the hijacked planes crashed into New York’s World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field, where one of the hijacked planes crashed into the ground after the passengers tried to retake the plane.

Two of these hijacked airliners, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were intentionally crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City, killing a lot of people.

About 2,750 people were killed in New York, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 in Pennsylvania, all 19 terrorists died.

About 1,100 victims have yet to have any remains found.
